Review: Allianz NFL Div 1 Week 4

The fourth round of top tier action saw Kerry scrape their second win while Mayo continued to look a serious outfit. Donegal and Galway couldn’t be separated while the Rossies were finally stopped.

Kerry 0-12 Armagh 0-11 @ Austin Stack Park

Kerry got their league campaign back on track in Tralee with a hard fought victory by the narrowest of margins over Armagh.

The sides were level on 0-6 at half-time and the second half would be a similarly close affair. On 70 minutes the sides were still tied at 0-10 each but points from Tony Brosnan and Donal O’Sullivan in five minutes of additional time put the Kingdom ahead.

A late Armagh goal chance went begging and the home side took their second Division One win of 2023.

Mayo 4-10 Tyrone 0-12 @ MacHale Park

Four-goal Mayo maintained their unbeaten form with a ten point win over Tyrone in Castlebar.

Aidan O’Shea and James Carr netted in the first half and Enda Hession and Diarmuid O’Connor struck goal in the second half to make it too difficult for the goalless Red Hands to contend with their hosts.

The league form of the Green and Red appears to be setting the county up for a serious tilt at the Championship under the new management of Kevin McStay.

Donegal 1-9 Galway 1-9 @ Letterkenny

Galway fought back against hosts Donegal to earn their second stalemate of this year’s league

Donegal led the Tribesmen by six points at one moment in the opening half and took a 1-6 to 1-3 lead into the interval.

Galway would take the lead in the second half as both sides missed chances. It took over half an hour for the Tir Chonaill to score, with Oisin Gallen and then Conor O’Donnell scoring to bring affairs even. Robert Finnerty punched over the bar to send Galway back into the lead only for Jason McGee to level soon after.

Monaghan 0-14 Roscommon 0-11 @ Clones

Monaghan ended the Rossies unbeaten start to the top tier with a three point win over their Connacht foes at St. Tiernach’s Park.

On their way to a second successive win, the Farney led 0-7 to 0-5 at half time.  Monaghan would retain their lead for the rest of the game although Roscommon would keep them on their toes.

The hosts had nine scorers at Clones, with talisman Jack McCarron leading the way with 0-4. No Roscommon player notched more than two points throughout the game and the county’s struggle for scores ultimately cost them.
