Review: Allianz NFL Div 1 Week 2

Roscommon are the only side with a 100% record after two rounds of fixtures, meanwhile Kerry and Tyrone got off the mark at home as Armagh battle late to draw with Mayo.

Kerry 3-16 Monaghan 0-14 @ Fitzgerald Stadium

Kerry stormed to an 11-point win over Monaghan in Killarney to pick up their first win of the campaign.

The Kingdom led 0-10 to 0-06 at the interval after they gained momentum late in the opening half. Dara Roche put away the hosts’ first goal early into the second 35 and Paudie Clifford’s goal later on would give them a nine-point lead.

Ryan O’Toole was sent off for the Farney on 55 minutes in what would become a difficult game for Vinney Corey’s side, made worse by league debutant Donal O’Sullivan’s goal in the final moments.

Galway 0-08 Roscommon 0-09 @ Pearse Park

Roscommon edged provincial rivals Galway by a point after Richard Hughes kicked over in the fourth minute of additional time to keep his side’s perfect start in the top tier intact.

The hosts led by two points after a cagey opening half that saw their All-Star full-forward Damian Comer stretchered off with a leg injury.

The Maroons held a gap of two points over their opponents with less than 15 minutes remaining, but Roscommon came firing back with points from Ben O’Carroll and Diarmuid Murtagh to level the game before Hughes got the vital winner.

Tyrone 0-16 Donegal 0-08 @ Healy Park

Tyrone inflicted an eight-point defeat on Ulster rivals Donegal in Omagh to acquire their first win of Division 1.

Darren McCurry notched seven points in this tie which saw the Red Hands in control for the majority. Donegal struggled to breakdown the Tyrone defence and their mass defence was not totally effective with their opponents ahead.

Scores from Hugh McFadden and Joel Bradley Walsh in the final moments arrived far too late to have a positive impact on the game and Tyrone eased to victory.

Armagh 0-17 Mayo 0-17 @ The Athletic Grounds

Armagh launched a late comeback to earn a draw with Mayo to see both counties maintain their unbeaten start to the league.

Armagh led 0-08 to 0-06 at the midway point but they found themselves come under increasing pressure from the Green and Red early in the second half.

A succession of points from the likes of Ryan O’Donoghue, Cillian O’Connor and James Carr catapulted Mayo into the lead.

The Orchard County kept fighting however, and they got on top late on with several points. Talisman Riann O’Neill kept his nerve to score a 45’ and two frees to tie things up in the final stages in front of a thoroughly entertained Armagh home support.
