O’Dea relishing Munster final vs Kerry

Limerick’s Seán O’Dea is excited by the prospect of facing as good an opponent as Kerry ahead of his first Munster Senior Football Final this Saturday.

Speaking to Sporting Limerick this week, the Kilteely Dromkeen man remarked on how their rise through the divisions has prepared them to face an elite opponent such as the Kingdom.

“I think it’s possibly a little bit more enjoyable when you’re playing Division 3 teams and even some Division 2 teams in the championship as we have. Often the game is a little bit more open and there’s probably more of an onus on attack and trying to get scores.

“In Division 4 like 1-12 or 1-13 is good enough to win. In Division 4 football and Division Two as well I suppose, you have to put up 17 points to win and you know that just forces you to be a lot sharper in terms of your execution and you also have to just really you have to really commit numbers forward as well.

“It’s a challenge when you’re coming from Division 4 but it’s something that you can get really get excited about and we definitely relish trying to add additional elements to our game and to try and be more expansive in how we play.

“It’s easy to talk about doing it. It’s a lot more challenging (actually doing it) and I suppose when we’ve had some games this year where we’ve put up a good score it is something that you do enjoy. But to be honest, win any kind of game at all. That’s all that really matters, it doesn’t matter how you get over the line.”

On the prospect of being able to showcase their talents against a side many are tipping for the Sam Maguire Cup, the defender mentioned how he and his side have talked about the excitement such an occasion can bring.

“I think the lads are just really like looking forward to it and it’s it’s something that we’ve talked about. We want to make sure we enjoy the occasion and not shut ourselves off from it.

“We’re going to be focused on what we do, we’re going to be focused on what on our game plan is, but at the same time I think we’re going to try and look around and embrace the fact that it’s not every day you get to play in a Munster final.

“I wasn’t even sure if I’d ever play in one so I’m just kind of happy to be there and i just want to make sure I give it my all and I’d say a lot of the lads are the same.”
