Leinster SFC: Dublin sweep Wexford aside
Dublin exorcised their league demons at Wexford Park this evening after they swept aside Wexford to progress to a Leinster Semi-Final.
Con O'Callaghan returned for Dublin and tallied 1-6 for the side recently relegated from Division One league football.
Wexford lacked the scoring power to pose any threat to the Dubs who laid down a marker today with their relentless attacking.
The Model County did well in the opening stages of the clash, their defensive minded strategy paying dividends as they failed to concede a single point until the ninth minute, although they could not score themselves when they got forward.
Dean Rock opened scoring for the visitors with a point, quickly followed by another from Brian Fenton.
Wexford replied through an excellent Eoghan Nolan point from distance as he evaded the pressure of a Dublin defence that would be dogged all game.
That was as good as it got for the Model County in that half as they failed to score again while their opponents kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Points from Brian Fenton and Brian Howard in quick succession were followed by a Dean Rock 45 to extend the Dubs' lead to four points on 21 minutes.
John Small ran up the field and his shot on goal hit the Wexford crossbar to the relief of the home supporters as the Dubs began to get well on top and Fenton got a third point on 26 minutes soon after.
Much was made of the return from injury of Con O'Callaghan and he made his first major contribution before the half-hour mark, his effort on goal saw the Blues hit the crossbar again, though it went over for a point despite the protests of wide-ball from the locals.
Wexford made a few forays forward but struggled to get the better of the Dublin backs, who could win the ball back and counter at pace.
Further scores from Dean Rock, Cormac Costello and a fourth from Brian Fenton saw the Dubs go into the break up 0-10 to 0-1.
The second-half only differed from the first-half in that it saw Dublin improve on their scoring tally.
Fenton opened scoring two minutes in and Con O'Callaghan hit the crossbar with another effort on goal only for it to rebound out to him so he could bundle it into the back of the Wexford net.
The next 10 minutes saw Ciaran Kilkenny get in on scoring with his first point, followed by a second from Costelllo and another from O'Callaghan as Wexford could summon only a single point in reply through Ben Brosnan.
O'Callaghan raised the white flag twice in quick succession before the 50th minute as Dublin offered the home side no relief, John Small and O'Callaghan scoring again before the hour mark.
Niall Hughes got a point back in between for Wexford's third score of the game, but his was quickly nullified by Tom Lahiff's first for the Sky Blues.
Padraig Hughes got the Model County's fourth and final point in the closing stages, which also saw Brian Howard and inevitably, Con O'Callaghan, return points for Dublin, to hand the reigning Leinster champions a 27-point victory.
