Roundup: D4 Allianz Football League

Cavan remain the only unbeaten team in Division 4 as the league season begins to hot up in the race for promotion.

Cavan’s win over Carlow saw them go top, while Tipperary, Leitrim and Wexford also picked up important victories.

Tipperary 1-13 Sligo 1-9, Semple Stadium

After looking lethargic in the first two games of their league campaign they hushed their doubters with a fine two-point win over promotion-chasing Sligo.

Conor Sweeney and Sean O’Connor impressed for the Premier County with O’Connor getting the Tipp goal.

Luke Towey raised a green flag for Sligo after six minutes. Sean Carrabine, Niall Murphy, Pat Hughes, Paul Kilcoyne, and Paul McNamara were all stand-out players for Sligo but poor decision making and sloppiness cost them the game.

Wexford 0-11 London 1-6, McGovern Park, Ruislip

London were brought down to earth will a bump as they lost their unbeaten record as they went down by two points at McGovern Park.

London were guilty of taking the foot off the gas in the second-half and Wexford’s high defensive line and the pressure they put on the London backline meant London really struggled to get out of the own 45 let alone own half as Wexford lifted themselves from the foot of the table.

Liam Gavaghan and James Hynes got London rolling while James Gallagher scored 1-1 as London looked to secure a fourth win on the bounce.

Mark Rossiter and John Tubritt put Wexford in contention for the win and Tom Byrne and Sean Ryan helped Wexford secure the win.

London travel to Sligo next and you get the impression that game could have a say whether London’s promotion hopes become a reality or not.

Cavan 0-19 Carlow 1-12, Kingspan Breffni

Cavan took full advantage of London’s narrow loss to go top of Division 4 as they recorded a 0-19 to 1-12 victory over Carlow at Kingspan Breffni.

Gearóid McKiernan put in a man of the match performance as he scored seven points as Cavan held off Carlow despite being reduced to 14 men after the second-half dismissal of Thomas Galligan.

Niall Hickey found the Cavan net but his side couldn’t capitalise on the numerical advantage.

Cavan now sits top of the table with a game in hand on London after Cavan v Sligo was called off last weekend.

Leitrim 2-17 Waterford 1-13, Fraher Field, Dungarvan

Leitrim shrugged off last week’s defeat to London with a clinical win against Waterford at Fraher Field. Waterford were looking like they could pull off a shock win against promotion-chasing Leitrim.

The home side came from six points down to lead early in the second half thanks to Darragh Corcoran’s goal.

But Leitrim under Andy Moran are a side that pushes defences until the final whistle. Leitrim kicked into gear and from Tom Prior and Darragh Rooney grabbed a goal each to seal a 2-17 to 1-13 victory and are now two points off a top two spot.
