Roundup: D4 Allianz Football League

The race for promotion in Division Four is promising to be the most exciting in years heading into the last two weeks of the league campaign.

Cavan saw their promotion charge disrupted by a impressive Tipperary.

While Sligo and Leitrim recorded vital wins to keep their promotion bid alive.

At the other end of the table a resurgent Wexford heaped for misery on Waterford as they picked up a second win of the league season.

Sligo 3-19 London 0-10 – Markievicz Park

Sligo bounced back from a couple of defeats as they thrashed London by 18 points.

Niall Murphy put in a ‘Man of the Match’ performance scoring 2-5, as London were humbled and given a massive reality check.

Murphy got the first goal of the game before Brian Egan got a second Sligo goal a minute later. Murphy grabbed his second and Sligo’s third late on to put the icing on the cake.

It was a ill-disciplined London performance that saw a number of the Londoners cautioned.

Conor Griffin and Conal Gallagher both saw red for their sides but it had no real effect on the result as Sligo cruised home.

Leitrim 2-14 Carlow 1-10, Netwatch Cullen Park

Leitrim kept their chances of promotion alive with comfortable win over Carlow.

Carlow weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.

Keith Beirne who has been Leitrim’s main threat in attack this season put the visitors ahead early doors.

Jamie Clarke would hit back for Carlow through a penalty. Carlow then got into the game and despite Ryan O’Rourke getting a second Leitrim goal, Carlow led at the break.

In the second-half Beirne and O’Rourke aided by their teammate Jack Heslin made sure Leitrim left with the points.

Wexford 0-15 Waterford 0-14, Innovate Wexford Park

Mark Rossiter led the way as Wexford built on their newly found League momentum.

Wexford were in control for the virtually the whole match and had a six point lead at one stage in the first-half and led 0-10 to 0-6 at the break.

Jason Curry and Darragh Corcoran kept Waterford in the game as they scored four points each.

Tom O’Connell made it a one point game deep into injury-time but time had run out for Waterford who headed home to Munster with nothing.

Tipperary 1-11 Cavan 1-7, Kingspan Breffni

Tipperary leapfrogged London and moved up to second as they recorded a surprise win in Cavan.

Tipperary started on the front through Conor Sweeney who got the games first point.

Cavan got rolling and were in touching distance of Tipperary before Sweeney raised a green flag in the 20th minute.

Patrick Lynch kept Cavan close before  Caoimhin O’Reilly grabbed a goal in injury-time which put the gap between the two back to a point at half-time.

Cavan would only score three points in the second-half and their lack of accuracy when shooting cost them.

Sweeney continued to add to the Tipperary score alongside Mark Russell and Jack Kennedy as Tipperary closed out a crucial win.
