Preview: D4 Allianz Football League

With the rest of Division 4 enjoying a week’s break, each of the four counties involved in this weekend rearranged matches will be looking to secure vital points in order to keep up with those who lead the division.

Cavan have a golden chance to go two points clear of second placed London with a win in Sligo. Sligo on the other hand will go second with a win over Cavan and would be carrying a fair amount of momentum going into their big clash against London next weekend should they bounce back with a win.

Further down the table Wexford host Tipperary at Chadwicks Wexford Park. Both sides picked up their first wins of the season last weekend and will looking to add to their impressive hard-fought wins over London and Sligo respectively.

Sligo v Cavan, Sunday March 6th, Markievicz Park Throw-in 2pm

Table toppers Cavan, travel to Markievicz Park for a match against Sligo in what is promising to be one of the stand out fixtures of the league season.

Sligo will be looking to bounce back from their surprise defeat to Tipperary after winning their first two games – including the 0-28 to 0-5 thrashing of Carlow.

Cavan have a number of threats in attack they include Gearóid McKiernan who scored seven points (0-7, 4f) can still dictate play and find scores for The Breffni. Patrick Lynch has the ability to make himself a handful too.

Sligo aren’t short of ammo in front of goals either, Niall Murphy (0-15, 6f) and Sean Carrabine (0-10, 0-4f, 0-1 ’45) are amongst the top-scorers in Division Four and you can bet the Cavan defence have been told to do their homework on the pair.

You’d hope RTÉ have booked cameras for this match so that the highlights can be shown on League Sunday because it’s shaping up to be a cracker.

Wexford v Tipperary, Sunday March 6th, Chadwicks Wexford Park Throw-in – 2pm

After last weekend’s comeback against London, tails should be up in the Wexford camp… but on the other had Tipperary tails will be equally high after their win against Sligo.

After toiling in vain in the first two matches Wexford’s hard work was rewarded with an impressive win against London.

They were solid in attack and at the back and in the second-half their high press strangled London, and at times London couldn’t get out of their 45 let alone their own half.

John Tubritt and Mark Rossiter lead the way for Wexford as they got three points each against the Thamessiders and will be looking to build on last weekend’s performance with more points.

Their visitors Tipperary have a proven scorer in their ranks in the form of their captain Conor Sweeney.

Sweeney is Division Four’s second top-scorer and has scored an impressive (2-17, 0-13f,0-2m) already this season.

However, there’s been times already this year where he has appeared isolated in attack and it could suit the likes of Pauide Feehan, and Sean O’Connor to be on form on Sunday too.

Expect a tightly contested, hard-fought game.

Whoever wants this the most will come out on top.
