Preview: Allianz Football League – Division 4

The fourth round of league action in Allianz Division 4 takes place this weekend, this time all eight teams are in action after the weather disrupted the league schedule last weekend.

In the surviving matches Carlow picked up a first win of the campaign after losing to London and Sligo in their first two league games.

London lead the pack after the crunch match between Sligo and Cavan was postponed due to an unplayable pitch.
London haven’t won all of their games so far by luck. In all three victories they’ve shown that they can really cause a stir this season and have looked mature and composed, especially in the victory last weekend against Leitrim. Their second-half dominance and refusal to panic in attack and in defence has meant the GAA world has now woken up to the fact London are a serious team with bags of potential.

Saturday, February 26 Tipperary v Sligo, FBD Semple Stadium, 7pm
Tipperary v Sligo kicks off the Division Four action on Saturday evening under the lights in Thurles.

The home side will have a task on their hands and since winning the Munster Championship in 2020 Tipp have been a shadow of that side that ended an 85 year wait for Munster glory.

They were tipped for promotion before the season started but nothing less than a win will see Tipp’s promotion hopes start to fade.

Sligo will be looking to stay in the promotion mix and should edge out the hosts on paper. Niall Murphy and Pat Spillane have been exciting to watch whilst Conor Sweeney appears to be the only real threat Tipperary have in attack.

But Division 4 has been the most entertaining out for the four leagues so we may be in for a surprise

Sunday, February 27 London v Wexford, McGovern Park, 1pm
Wexford are in all sorts of bother and London are riding the crest of a wave at the minute.

Wexford v Tipperary was another fixture that fell afoul of the weather. The Yellowbellies were denied a chance to get the season up and running at last to Mother Nature and now face a London side that have unquestionable belief in themselves.

James, Conal and Liam Gallagher can do a job for London. James Hynes and Chris Farley can cause damage when needed too.

Sunday, February 27 Cavan v Carlow, Kingspan Breffni Park, 2pm
Cavan should really have too much for Carlow when these two face off.

Cavan have the ability to match the score line Sligo registered against Carlow two weeks ago and after last week’s win.

Carlow can’t afford to take one step forward and two backwards if they are to make any progress this season.

Darragh Foley top-scored last time out and Carlow will be hoping he can do the business once again this weekend.

Sunday, February 27 Waterford v Leitrim, Fraher Field, 2pm

Leitrim will be looking to bounce back from their defeat against London last weekend when they face Waterford in Dungarvan.

Waterford have lost their last two matches and given Leitrim’s threat in the form of Keith Beirne Waterford may be overwhelmed when they face Sunday’s visitors.

However, Dylan Guiry got two goals in the defeat against Carlow and he could help Waterford spring a surprise and get Waterford a match needed win.

Waterford showed great fight in the opener against Tipperary, however their form has dropped way off since then. They were found out against London, humbled against Carlow and they could face themselves on the receiving end of a harsh score line if they haven’t learnt their lesson from last weekend’s defeat to Carlow.
