Preview: Allianz Football League – Division 4

London were the talk of the town last weekend in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League after their stirring comeback in Carlow.

As attention turns to the second round of fixtures this weekend and whether London can make it two wins from two… we preview this weekends Division four action.

Sligo v Carlow, Sunday February 6th, 1pm, Markievicz Park

Niall Murphy and Seán Carrabine will be the key for Sligo as they try and secure a second win of the league season. The Yeats County narrowly beat Wexford last week 0-12 to 0-10 in a match where the two sides matched each other for the majority of the match.

Carrabine scored six points including one to put his side ahead in the latter stages of the game.

Last week Carlow were stunned by a remarkable London performance and were guilty of thinking the game was wrapped up when they held a 10 point lead.

However Carlow have a significant threat in the attack Colm Hulton scored 1-05, (2f) against the men from the English capital and can cause Sligo trouble at the back.

London v Waterford, Sunday February 6th, 1pm, Ruislip

Write off London at your peril. It’s as simple as that really.

After 23 months away thanks to COVID-19 London’s comeback in Carlow was the talk of the four divisions last weekend.

After a sluggish start, it seemed like the lack of match practice was going to cost London especially when they went 10 points down.

However, Jamie Clarke’s straight red card for the hosts was the green light the Londoners to rally and turn the game on its head.

Skipper Liam Gavaghan, Enda McCormick and Killian Butler who played crucial parts in this famous win as London got off to a dream start in the league.

Waterford will be no pushovers and have an equal chance of getting a positive result in West London Sunday.

Darragh Corcoran starred for The Déise against Tipperary and can do so again this weekend as can his teammate Dermot Ryan.

GAA fans based in London should take heed of the fact London after offering free entry this weekend (and every other home game in both codes) because this one is lining up to be a cracker.

Tipperary v Leitrim, Sunday February 6th, 2pm,  FBD Semple Stadium

Tipperary will be looking to record the first win of their league campaign this weekend after a sluggish opening day performance against Waterford.

Tipperary took the lead four times and then lost it as Waterford constantly dragged themselves back into the game as the spoils were shared last week.

Tipp had five debutants take the field last week so maybe a lack of experience contributed to the fact they had to settle for a draw.

Leitrim were comfortably beaten by Cavan in their opening match despite starting the brightest out of the two counties last week.

Keith Beirne will be the man Tipperary will have to keep an eye on. Whilst in Leitrim will have to keep an eye on the prolific Premier man Conor Sweeney who can do some damage when not closely monitored.

Cavan v Wexford, Sunday February 6th,  2pm, Kingspan Breffni,

Wexford face a tough task when they head north on Sunday afternoon and take on Cavan.

The Yellowbellies were unlucky to lose against Sligo and are looking to add some points to the table.

Ben Brosnan who top-scored for Wexford last week with five points of his own could help cause a shock in Cavan on Sunday.

However, the likes of Paddy Lynch, Cormac O’Reilly, and the free-taking ability of keeper Raymond Galligan could prove crucial. Not just this Sunday but throughout the season if Cavan want an automatic return to Division 3.
