Brooks secures draw for Wexford in Fermanagh

Wexford keeper Darragh Brooks pointed an injury time 45' to secure a draw for Wexford in their opening Tailteann Cup clash with Fermanagh in Brewster Park.

The game had been a tight affair with little to separate the sides and the keeper's intervention was a fair reflection on a pulsating 70 minutes of action between the two sides.

Fermanagh were first to score with early points from Aidan Breen and Ultan Kelm giving them a 0-2 score inside six minutes.

Kevin O’Grady got Wexford on the board but when Conor McShea was taken down, Fermanagh had a penalty which defender Luke Flanagan calmly converted for a five-point buffer.

Ryan Lyons and Garvan Jones struck points which extended the lead to seven.

Although Ben Brosnan struck twice (and the woodwork) for Wexford, two more points from Lyons on the verge of half time sent Fermanagh in ahead by 1-7 to 0-4.

With Flanagan’s goal still looking decisive, the teams traded a further three points apiece, Eoghan Nolan with a quickfire Wexford brace preceding Lyons’ fourth point of the day.

Robbie Brooks was then denied by the crossbar but eventually some luck shone on the visitors.

Home goalkeeper Sean McNally was shown the black card and although his replacement Jack Kelly initially repelled Brosnan, the Wexford was alert to gobble up the rebound and leave just two points separating the sides entering the final fifteen.

Calmly taken points from Cathal Walsh and Niall Hughes' second of the game brought Wexford within one point.

Lyons’ third brace of the day though made it 1-12 to 1-10 going into seven additional minutes.

Substitute Conor Kinsella halved the deficit before Brosnan, fittingly seemed to be the match-levelling Wexford hero.

Yet another action substitute had a late impact, Fermanagh’s Sean Quigly firing over what looked like being the point that sealed victory.

But not to be denied, in the final play, Brooks struck that fantastic late 45 to level up an exhilarating encounter that finished 1-13 apiece and saw the spoils shared in this Group 4 Talteann Cup game.

Wexford host Antrim next weekend while Fermanagh make the short journey to Carrick on Shannon to face Leitrim.
