SFC: Hurley Magic Seals Cork Win
A 60 second salvo from Brian Hurley was the difference as Cork overcame Louth 2-12 to 2-8 in a dramatic encounter at Pairc Uí Chaoimh.
The hosts got off to the better start through talisman Stephen Sherlock who opened the scoring from a free in the 7th minute.
Captain Brian Hurley also began sharply and pointed a mark moments later before Sherlock got another to extended Cork’s lead to 3 points early on.
It took 17 minutes for Louth to get their first score of the day but what a score it was.
A last-ditch tackle on Sean Powter began a swift counter attack up the other end through John Clutterbuck which went through the hands before Liam Jackson fisted the ball into the Cork to level the game.
From here, the game became more scrappy tense affair with both sides relying on their free takers with Stephen Sherlock and Sam Mulroy adding two frees apiece in the second quarter.
Hurley had the pick of the scores from a Cork perspective with his effort from 35 yards opening up a 0-7 to 1-2 lead on the half hour mark.
Corner back Dan Corcoran would get Louth’s first point from play on the stroke of half time with his point from a narrow angle leaving his side trailing by a point going into the break.
Sherlock and Mulroy traded frees at the beginning of the second half before the St. Finbarrs man got his first from play in the 41st minute with a excellent right footed curling effort to leave it 0-9 to 1-4.
While the forwards may have been getting all of the glory, it was Chris Kelly in goal who Cork could thank for staying in the lead when he made a tremendous double save on 48 minutes.
Hurley had a goal chance of his own in the 54th minute as he slid in on a low cross which Louth goalkeeper James Califf did well to tip around the post for a 45 which was duly converted by Sherlock for his seventh point of the day.
0-10 to 1-5 was the state of play going into the last ten minutes with Cork attempting to keep the ball for as long as possible much to the annoyance of the 3,000 spectators present.
That all changed in the space of a minute however as Brian Hurley got 1-1 in moments after two quick counter attacks to leave it 1-11 to 1-5 with five minutes remaining.
There would be more drama however in the injury time with two goals in the space of a minute. First through Colm O’Callaghan before Conor Grimes gave Louth hope in the dying moments.
A Sherlock free at the death left four between them however and its Cork who march on to the second round.
