Match Report
Dublin recorded their 13th Leinster Senior Football Title in a row, as they ran home convincing 21 point winners over Louth in the provincial final at headquarters this afternoon. Five goals showing their attacking threat, Paul Mannion, Sean Bugler, James McCarthy, Colm Basquel and Paddy Small all finished to the net, as Louth’s 50 year wait to overcome Dublin continueds. Sam Mulory shined for Louth in a game that his side were up against it throughout, he added ten points, but Dublin’s pressing of their kick out an intense running style saw them run riot in this decider. Dublin started well trying to work an early score through their attack, but it was Louth who got the opening score four minutes in, Sam Mulroy was fouled and he stepped up to slot the free for an early lead. Louth tried to press to add to that lead but passes were not going to hand, Dublin were looking dangerous but the Louth defence held firm, that was until Jack McCaffrey was sandwiched and brought down close to goal, Cormac Costello tapped over the resulting free to level in the tenth minute. Mulroy was leading by example for Louth, he pointed a free outside the 45m line to restore the visitors lead, but Dublin almost straight away levelled through Sean Bugler for their first from play, but Louth would also add their first from play on the 12th minute as Mulory added a beauty to see Louth ahead on the third occasion. From here however Dublin took control, starting to rubber stamp their authority on proceedings, Costello added another free to level the game, but Louth were architects of their own downfall almost a massive error by goalkeeper James Califf, as he came out of goal to play centre field, Bugler pointed on the end of a solid attack that could have seen the ball in and empty net, seconds later Niall Sharkey produced a massive piece of defending to block Brian Fenton racing in on goal. Costello converted the resulting 45, Dublin ahead 0-5 to 0-3, they now hit their rhythm and would blitz Louth, pressing their kick out was starting to impact their play, a suck the life out of them, with Costello acting as conductor in attack, Con O’Callgahan called a mark and pointed. Costello then added a fourth, before another kick out was turned over by Dublin, they ran bodies in totally outnumbering Louth, carving them open O’Callaghan hand passed across the face of goal to Paul Mannion to palm home, Jack McCaffery kept that scoring up with another effort, could well have been a second goal, but it went over the blackspot, ahead 1-8 to 0-3 after 22 minutes. The kick out game plan was still causing Louth issues, as Dublin were rattling their scores, O’Callaghan and Bugler both waving the white flag, before McCaffery added his second as the Dubs hit 1-9 without reply as we ticked past the half hour mark, McCaffery would go off just after unsure had he a knock picked up. It took 22 minutes for Louth to get their fourth point, another Mulroy free putting them on the board, they finished the half well as Conor Grimes and Craig Lennon pointed in added time, to leave the score 1-12 to 0-6 at the break, still a huge mountain to climb. Louth came out the blocks firing in the second half, Mulroy pointed another free before Liam Jackson curled one over from play, the Dubs lead down to seven momentarily, as Costello tapped over a free in the 41st minute to make it an eight point game, his fifth point of the afternoon. Mulory was keeping Louth in the tie as he added his sixth point of the game, but Dublin who started slow found their shape, as Louth were caught ball watching, Costello played a ball inside that Cian Murphy collected, he passed out for James McCarthy who fired low to the net for the second Dublin goal in the 45 minute, Dublin ahead 2-13 to 0-9. Again they hit a purple patch, two O’Callaghan points were followed by Ciaran Kilkenny coming up to add his first of the day, Dublin stretching the gap to 2-16 to 0-9 after 52 minutes, Conor Grimes added a point for Louth as Stephen Cluxton made a great save to top it over for a point. But again Dublin hit top gear, Kilkenny pointed before another scorching attack saw Bugler add their third goal of the contest, a great team move seeing the centre half forward hitting home, that was followed up by John Small getting a point. Mulory was in sensational form, he added two more points before the hour mark his tally eight for the afternoon at this point, but Dublin were miles ahead and would soon put the game beyond doubt. They were ahead 3-18 to 0-13, as Mulory added his ninth point after 67 minutes, but a late flurry saw Kilkenny add his third point, before Paddy Small finished to the net after Lee Gannon struck the crossbar, he was underneath the rebound, Dublin ahead 4-19 to 0-13. Ciaran Downey added a late consolation score for Louth, but Dublin still went in search of further scores, Dean Rock fisted over, Mulory made it ten for the afternoon with a free in added time, but Colm Basquel finished with a rasper to the net for Dublin’s fifth, as they wrapped up a 13th in a row of Leinster titles.Dubs Romp Home To Complete 13 Leinster Titles In A Row
