Leinster SFC: Wexford hold out against Offaly for win
Ben Brosnan was the star of the show as Wexford beat Offaly 1-15 to 1-12 to progress to the quarter-final of the Leinster Senior Football Championship.
Despite a late flurry from Offaly, The Yellowbellies held on being helped massively by Brosnan scoring 1-9 in the game.
Brosnan got Shane Roche’s side off to a great start scoring their first two points of the game as the two teams traded scores in the opening five minutes.
Offaly managed to give themselves a two point cushion thanks to quick scores from Mark Abbot and Johnny Moloney to make it 0-4 to 0-2.
However, Wexford would stay within a point of The Faithful thanks to scores from Eoghan Nolan and Glen Malone coming either side of a Bernard Allen free.
A late first-half point from Brosnan levelled the score at 0-5 to 0-5, but Bill Carroll would put the visitors ahead by one with the final kick of the half.
Wexford stayed hot on the heels of Offaly with the score at 0-7 to 0-6 to the visitors approaching the 40 minute mark.
However, it seemed as though they were starting to pull away when Johnny Moloney stormed through the Wexford defence before laying the ball off to Lee Pearson who smashed the ball past Darragh Brooks making it 1-7 to 0-6.
Martin O’Connor made it a two point game soon after and it was Brosnan who then led the Wexford comeback.
A lack of discipline from the visitors allowed him to score two quick free-kicks, before forcing a turnover to put Wexford a point ahead.
After converting another free, Brosnan would find the top corner of the goal to make it 1-12 to 1-7 with 15 minutes to go.
Brosnan would get his final score on the hour to give the hosts a six point lead.
The Offaly onslaught would ensue as Dylan Hyland, Paddy Dunican, Bill Carroll and Niall Darby all put points on the board.
However, it would not be enough as late points from Darragh Brooks and Tom Byrne put the game beyond doubt.
Wexford will now face Dublin next Saturday at home in the quarter-final.
