Review: Lidl NFL Div 1 Week 5

Kerry recorded their fifth win in a row when they defeated reigning League and All-Ireland Champions Meath on Saturday afternoon. Donegal remain bottom of Division 1 without a point following a heavy defeat to Cork.

Kerry 1-18 Meath 0-09

Kerry claimed their fifth league win in a row with 12 points to spare over Meath at Brosna on Saturday afternoon. 

Niamh Carmody scored 1-04. Her goal came in the fifth minute and it set the Kingdom on their way. They held a 1-07 to 0-05 lead at the break.

The Kingdom dominated after the break.Meath were unable to keep up with them in the second half and could only muster up four points. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh ended the game with 0-7 in another excellent display from the Munster side.

Dublin 2-11 Mayo 2-07

Late goals from Kate Sullivan and Caoimhe O’Connor saw Dublin come from behind to defeat Mayo. It leaves the Connacht side still second from bottom. 

Sinead Walsh scored a goal just before the break to give Mayo a three point lead. She added a second goal in the 32nd minute to extend the lead to six points.

Sullivan’s goal in the 52nd minute cut the gap to just one point. Jennifer Dunne leveled matters before O’Connor sealed the win for Dublin with a goal in stoppage time.

Cork 5-11 Donegal 0-01

Two goals apiece from Libby Coppinger and Rachel Leahy saw Cork inflict a heavy defeat on bottom side Donegal who remain without a point and are in relegation trouble.

The Rebels scored three goals in the opening quarter which laid the foundations for this fine win. Coppinger, Leahy and Roisin Phelan were all on target as Cork held an eleven point lead at the break 3-3 to 0-1, Ciara Garvey with Donegal’s sole score.

Such was Cork’s dominance, manager Shane Ronayne was able to make 14 substitutions. That didn’t affect Cork and they were able to add 2-8 to their scoreline in this emphatic win. 

Waterford 0-5 Galway 0-10

An excellent defensive display saw Galway defeat Waterford by five points and edge closer to securing a place in the Division 1 Final.

Galway, like Kerry, remain unbeaten so far. Roisin Leonard scored four frees for the Tribeswomen, with Olivia Divillly contributing two points. They held a four point going in at half-tme.

Waterford closed the gap to just one point in the early stages of the second half but Galway hit back to extend the lead by seven in the 49th minute. Waterford got two late consolation

points.
