Review: Lidl NFL Div 1 Week 4

Leaders Kerry produced a strong performance to defeat Dublin by 11 points on Saturday evening and make it four wins from four. Galway staged a fine comeback to defeat Cork by two points.

Meath 0-09 Mayo 2-06

Mayo came from four points down at half-time to claim their first league win. Two second half goals proved to be crucial in this win over the All-Ireland and league champions Meath.

Meath were also dealt a blow in the second half when Máire O’Shaughnessy was sin binned. Mayo made use of their numerical advantage.

Maria Concannon got Mayo’s first goal and then Rachel Kearns’ ‘45 ended up in the net for their second goal. Meath tried to get back into the game but couldn’t as they succumbed to their second defeat.

Kerry 3-15 Dublin 1-10

Kerry made it four wins from four with an excellent performance against Dublin in Tralee on Saturday afternoon. Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh once again was in superb form, scoring 11 points.

The damage was done in the first half as Kerry took a 2-10 to 1-4 lead in, at the break. Hannah O’Donoghue and Siofra O’Shea with the goals. Kate Sullivan had scored a goal for the Dubs in the 14th minute.

Dublin tried to make a comeback but Kerry held firm. The Kingdom got a third goal in the 55th minute through Ciara Murphy.

Donegal 0-07 Waterford 2-09

Donegal remain bottom of Division 1 and without a point after Waterford inflicted an eight point defeat on them. The win sees the Deise move up to third in the table.

Annie Fitzgerald and Lauren McGregor both raised the green flag in the opening half as they went in at half-time 2-3 to 0-4 in front.

Donegal could only score three more points in the second half as Waterford added six to their tally. Bríd McMaugh kicked over three points near the end. 

Galway 1-15 Cork 4-04

Galway recovered from the concession of three first half goals to maintain their unbeaten record in Division 1. They remain in second spot, two points behind leaders Kerry.

Trailing by three points, two goals in 30 seconds from Abby O’Mahony and Orla Cahalane gave the Rebels a three point lead in the 25th minute. Cahalane got a second goal in the 28th minute to give her side a 3-2 to 0-5 lead at the break.

Emma Cleary scored Cork’s fourth goal from the penalty spot in the 37th minute but then Galway made a stunning comeback. A goal from Louise Ward gave them the lead again in the 50th minute and they were able to hold on.
