Dubs Rack Up First Win Of All Ireland Series

Dublin got their first win of the All-Ireland series in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny when they stream-rolled an out-of-sorts Kildare side.

The Boys in Blue were clinical in front of the goal and came out of the blocks sharply looking to take the game to the Lilywhites.

The Dubs answered their critics after last week’s 14-point draw with Roscommon with many saying they were suffering in attack as they only scored 1-11 against the Rossies.

Today they fired in 22 points, 20 of which came from open play with Colm Basquel a stand-out performer while scoring five points and picking up the man-of-the-match award.

Both sides had drawn their opening game with Kildare being held by Sligo by a 0-14 scoreline. The last time the sides met the Dubs had to come from behind to edge past the Lilywhites in the Leinster Championship semi-final by two points in a 0-14 to 0-12 game in Croker in April.

Kildare made two changes from the side that drew 0-14 with Sligo, with Ben McCormack replacing Paul Cribbin and Neil Flynn coming in for Kevin Feely.

Dublin made three changes from their 1-11 to 0-14 stalemate with Roscommon, Colm Basquel, Sean McMahon, and Dean Rock replacing Cian Murphy, Ciaran Kilkenny, and Paul Mannion.

Dublin burst out of the blocks here scoring through Con O’Callaghan in the first minute, Ben McCormack replied for Kildare instantly.

Colm Basquel and O’Callaghan again put the Dubs up by two in the opening five minutes, the Metropolitans proving to be clinical in attack.

The Lilywhites were not prepared to lie down and scored three points unanswered to go 0-4 to 0-3 through Darragh Kirwan, Paddy Woodgate, and Aaron Masterson.

Around the 20-minute mark, Dublin began to run away with the game scoring six points in a row. Killian O’Gara scoring his first senior intercounty point on his debut after he replaced Cormac Costello just before throw-in.

The Blues were 0-11 up on Kildare’s 0-5 and it was looking like curtains for the Lilywhites, however, they weathered the storm and bounced back through two Kevin Flynn points and Kevin O’Callaghan to get within three points before Dean Rock scored his third point from a free kick.

Con O’Callaghan made it 91 points for Dublin seniors just before halftime to put Dublin up 0-13 to 0-8 at the break.

After the restart Ben McCormack fired two points over the bar in quick succession to give Kildare some hope of getting back into the game, however, that dream was short-lived as the Boys in Blue through Basquel and Sean Bugler replied.

Paul Mannion came on for youngster Killian O’Gara and scored two from open play, while Brain Fenton also got on the scoresheet.

Dublin saw the game out in an experienced manner while Kildare faded out of the game, with the Lilywhite going almost 20 minutes without scoring.

Con O’Callaghan came off after picking up a knock and Dublin will hope he will have recovered by the time their next match comes around against Sligo.

For Kildare, they will be looking to bounce back against a strong and talented Roscommon side to have any chance of proceeding in this year’s Sam Maguire.
