Roundup: Lidl NFL Division 1 Round 3

An excellent first half display helped Armagh to a two point win over Galway and in doing so make it three wins from three for the Orchard County. Galway, last year’s beaten Division 1 finalists have yet to register a point. A strong second half display saw Dublin come from nine points down to defeat Mayo by seven and in doing so pick up their first win of the league.

Armagh 0-08 Galway 0-06

A dominant first half display saw Armagh make it three wins from three with a two point win over Galway at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds. Galway have yet to register a point.

Armagh made a terrific start to the game and kicked over six unanswered points within the opening 27 minutes to give them a 0-06 to 0-00 lead at the break.

Galway came back at them in the second half. Ailbhe Davoren scored their first point in the 32nd minute. They had cut the gap to three points in the 40th minute before Kelly Mallon fired over a point for the Orchard County. The gap was two on two different occasions but Armagh held on for another fine win.

Mayo 2-08 Dublin 2-15

Dublin overcame a nine point half-time deficit to record a seven point win over Mayo in Ballina and in doing so picked up their first points of the league campaign.

It was impressive from Dublin who trailed 2-07 to 0-04 at the break. Lisa Cafferky scoring both goals for Mayo – one from the penalty spot.

Dublin were a different proposition after the break with Kate Sullivan and Caoimhe O’Sullivan finding the back of the net for Mick Bohan’s side. They took the lead for the first time in the 47th minute and hit 1-03 near the end to seal a great win.

Waterford 2-05 Meath 2-10

Meath kept their 100% record in the league intact as they picked up their third win of the campaign with a five point win over Waterford. It leaves the Deise without a point in Division 1.

Both sides scored early goals; Ailbhe Leahy for the Royals and Mairead O’Brien for the home side. O’Brien got a second goal soon after before Marion Farrelly raised the green flag to give Meath a one point lead. Meath were ahead at the break 2-03 to 2-07.

Meath made a fine start to the second half and were ahead by five in the 34th minute. Waterford had a chance to eat into the lead but missed frees. Rachel Casserly sealed a good win on the road at the end.

Kerry v Cork, Mon 5th Feb, Austin Stack Park, 3pm

The meeting of two great rivals in Tralee on Bank Holiday Monday. Form goes out the window when these two sides play.

Kerry’s only defeat in the league last year on the way to claiming the Division 1 title was away to Cork. The Rebel County defeated Kerry in the Munster Final. 

Kerry are currently top of Division 1 with two wins from two. After a fine win over Galway in their opening game, Cork lost to Armagh last weekend. They’ll hope to bounce back against Kerry, while the Kingdom will be out to make it three wins from three.
