Royals Make Winning Start To Senior Championship

Jenny Rispin made a winning start to her reign as Meath ladies football manager on a day of sunshine and showers in Dungarvan as the reigning TG4 All-Ireland champions did enough to carve out victory.

All Star forward Emma Duggan fired 1-4, including a late goal, as the Royals advanced to the TG4 All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals. Orlagh Lally landed four points from play for the visitors while Niamh Gallogly got two.

Waterford sharpshooter Lauren McGregor grabbed 1-4 as Pat Sullivan's side now enter a relegation battle. McGregor has shot nine goals this year across league and championship.

Bríd McMaugh opened the scoring after five minutes for the hosts. Wind assisted Meath took control as Niamh Gallogly, Orlagh Lally and Stacey Grimes opened up a 4-1 lead. The visitors were also guilty of seven first half wides.

The pre-match sunshine quickly turned to thunder and lightning. Despite the inclement weather, McMaugh fisted over on 24 minutes for Waterford after a driving run from Annie Fitzgerald. All Star attacker Emma Duggan was tightly marked but she eventually popped over her first point of the afternoon. Lally landed her third to make it 7-2 approaching the break. Just before the half-time hooter, Waterford were awarded a close range free and Lauren McGregor converted.

Kate McGrath narrowed the gap to three 70 seconds into the second period. Niamh O'Sullivan and Duggan split the posts at the other end. McGregor nailed a free for the hosts before Kellyann Hogan fired over a point from 40 metres (0-9 to 0-6).

That was as close as Waterford got. Duggan dispatched two frees before Meadhbh Byrne raised a white flag. McGregor got two frees to bring her total to four.

A late Orlagh Lally point wrapped up victory for Rispin's Royals. With two minutes left, Meath sub Ali Sherlock set up Duggan who slotted the ball into the corner of the Waterford net. Just before the full time hooter, McGregor rifled the ball to the top corner. Her ninth goal of the season, she has scored 9-18 in 2023 for the Déise.

Munster SFC: Cork cruise into decider

Áine Terry O’Sullivan, Melissa Duggan and Eimear Scally goals helped Cork overcome Waterford in the Munster LGFA SFC semi-final in Dungarvan on Sunday afternoon.

Ger McCarthy reports from Fraher Field, Dungarvan

Cork and Waterford’s previous meeting ended in a three-point Lidl National League victory for Shane Ronayne’s side back in March.

The Rebels were far more clinical this time around, finding the net on four occasions and restricting Waterford to six scores from open play.

Kerry will be a tougher proposition in the Munster final but Cork can be pleased with their efforts.

Dara Kiniry and Orla Finn came in for Meabh Cahalane and Libby Coppinger following the latter duo’s Camogie exertions the night before. Aoife Murray replaced Mairead Wall in Waterford’s starting fifteen.

A fractious opening saw both sides turn over possession until Cork blitzed their opponents during a devastating 5-minute spell.

Áine Terry O’Sullivan found the net in the middle of Doireann O’Sullivan (free) and Orla Finn (two) scores. Kellyann Hogan and Finn exchanged frees but Cork were full value for their early 1-4 to 0-1 lead.

Caoimhe McGrath slalomed through for a morale-boosting Waterford point before the hosts were guilty of wasting a string of scoring chances.

Cork came close to punishing their opponents profligacy when Ciara O’Sullivan was denied a goal by a superb Megan Dunford block. The Rebels continued to press and were rewarded with a superb Melissa Duggan goal after 20 minutes.

Orla Finn added two brilliant scores and Emma Cleary split the posts to make it 2-7 to 0-4 at the interval.

A pair of Kellyann Hogan frees reduced the deficit immediately after the restart. Yet, Cork underlined their clinical finishing ability with a third and match-clinching goal. Áine Terry O’Sullivan found the bottom corner at the end of another free-flowing move.

The closing quarter was highlighted by Cork’s fourth and final goal via Eimear Scally and a late Lauren McGregor green flag at the opposite end.

Waterford 1-4 – 4-7 Dublin

Goals key for Dubs in Dungarvan

A trio of goals proved key for Dublin as they began their defence of their Lidl Ladies Football League Division 1 title with a 12-point win over Waterford in Dungarvan this afternoon.

Mick Bohan's charges were well in command in the opening half, and led by 2-3 to 0-1 at the break, thanks to goals from Jennifer Dunne and Caoimhe O'Connor - the latter coming in first half injury time.

Waterford tried hard on the restart, but Siobhán Killeen's lobbed effort saw Dublin 11 points clear nine minutes into the second half.

Emma Murray grabbed a goal for the hosts, and although Dublin keeper Abby Shiels was sin-binned in the 49th minute, the Jackies stayed in control.

Hannah Leahy rounded off the victory, with their fourth goal deep into injury-time.

Dublin were on top in the early exchanges and Hannah Tyrrell landed their first score on three minutes. Waterford tested out the Dublin defence with Emma Murray and Aisling Mullaney trying to make the most of their chances but the scores came up the other end.

Dublin’s first goal arrived after eight minutes with a sweeping team move finished to the net by Jennifer Dunne. And Kate Sullivan was unlucky to see her effort drop into the arms of Eimear Gallagher in the Waterford goals a minute later.

Leah Caffrey and Orlagh Nolan both scored points to leave Dublin with a 1-3 to 0-0 lead at the water break. Waterford enjoyed more of the possession in the second quarter and were duly rewarded when Brid McMaugh scored from distance.

Dublin’s response was immediate in the shape of their second goal. Tyrrell won possession and her offload freed O’Connor who found the net. That goal gave Dublin a 2-3 to 0-1 advantage at the interval.

The hosts controlled much of the third quarter. Katie Murray grabbed their second score but this was cancelled out minutes later by a fine O’Connor point. Then substitute Siobhan Killeen left her mark on the game when she chipped Gallagher for Dublin’s third goal.

Waterford’s pressure eventually told when Emma Murray scored a goal just before the second half water break, making it an eight-point game, at 3-4 to 1-2.

Dublin were reduced to 14 players when Shiels was shown a yellow card but it didn’t swing the game in Waterford’s favour. They did score through Lauren McGregor and Brid McMaugh, but Dublin finished the stronger with Tyrrell, Siobhan Woods and Hannah Leahy all finding their range to ensure the reigning champions opened their 2022 account with a comfortable win.
