Match Report

Tyrone Join Clare In Intermediate Knockout Stages

Tyrone with a game to spare can plan for the knockout stages of the Ladies Intermediate Championship, earning their place with a high scoring win over Offaly this afternoon.

Goals rained supreme for Tyrone as they netted three in the opening half, two in less than a minute, Sasha Byrne with 2-2 a strong full-forward, while Maria Canavan and Aoife McGahan also shone.

Offaly started well but wilted as Tyrone put the shoulder to the wheel and took their scoring chances, they should have had more but will be happy to see a 18 point difference in this tie.

Aoibhinn McHigh put Tyrone ahead as they looked to put their stamp down early, four minutes later they picked the ball out of the net as Saorah Doyle put Offaly ahead by two points.

The sides exchanged scores from Aoife McGahan and Roisin Cockram, before Tyrone came back into the tie, Maria Canavan missed an early goal chance, she then missed a pena;ty in the seventh minute after Emer Nally hauled down Aoife Horisk, but the goal would soon arrive as McGahan made it 1-2 to 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.

From here Tyrone kept the scoreboard ticking, Maria Canava, Grainne Rafferty and Sasha Byrne all kicking scores to build a lead, Byrne scored a goal and two points in an unanswered six minute window, 2-6 to 1-1 the hosts looking strong as the half was coming to an end.

Emma Hegarty netted the sides third goal with an absolute rocket to the roof of the Offaly net just seconds later she had missed a shot at goal earlier, but on the second chance made no mistakes, Rafferty kicked her second point of the half as time was coming to an end but with over five minutes of added time Doyle notched a score to make it 3-7 to 1-2.

Cockram got the second half underway after six minutes on the scoring front, but any momentum Offaly had with the opening score quickly vanished, Byrne converting her second goal just seconds after.

Another fine spell of shooting kept Tyrone further away from Offaly, it took 21 minutes for Offaly to kick their next score, Tyrone notched 1-8 in that timeframe, Eve Kelly notching a score her side down by 4-16 to 1-3.

Cockram, Emma Hand and another beauty from Cockram put three points over late on in consolation, but for Tyrone they were able to ease in truth to the knockout phases, the game with Clare next will be interesting to see their approach to the tie.
