UCD promoted as Waterford demoted

UCD dumped Waterford out of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with a 2-1 victory at Richmond Park.

Goals from Dara Keane after 17 minutes and Colm Whelan in the 34th minute cancelled out Anthony Wordsworth early 5th minute opener.

Waterford’s Niall O’Keefe was sent for an early shower for a second bookable offence in the dying stages of normal time.

The Blues came out all guns blazing which paid off early as the ball fell kindly to Wordsworth who rifled his shot low into the UCD net giving the premier division side a well-deserved lead in the 5th minute of play.

The goal woke something inside the students and alive came Kerrigan, Whelan and Keane, the most dangerous trio in the first division.

Mid way through the half Kerrigan drove into the box and smashed the ball across the goal finding Keane at the back post to level the game.

With UCD in the ascendancy, it only makes sense that Whelan pops up to give the Belfield side a much-deserved lead. A strike from Keane was parried into the path of Whelan who needed no invitation to tap the ball into Murphys empty net.

Both sides threatened as the half wore on but neither could capitalise on mistakes at the back with Whelan striking a free at the wall, and Junior swinging in a number of frees for the blues.

UCD came out invigourated in the second half going straight for the Deise side, with the front three added by the support of Jack Keaney and Paul Doyle.

Managerless blues emptied their bench in contrast to UCD who made on sub in added on time, however the UCD defence stood strong holding off the likes of Patterson, Junior and Martin.

The Students broke forward on a number of occasions causing so much trouble for the Waterford defence the entire back four received yellow cards including half time substitute Niall O’Keefe who received his marching orders with a few minutes remaining in normal time for a second bookable offence.

The result see UCD return to the SSE Airtricity Premier Division and the blues relegated to the First Division.
