Niamh Reid Burke & Becky Cassin – WNL Podcast Episode 6

On the Women’s National League Podcast this week Peamount goalkeeper Niamh Reid Burke and Cork City captain Becky Cassin join Stephanie Roche and Breifne Earley ahead of the International break.

Once again Stephanie Roche and Breifne Earley chat through the domestic action of the past weekend as they look back at each of the games played over an idle weekend for Peamount United.

Breifne & Stephanie are joined by Steph’s Peamount United teammate Niamh Reid Burke (12:25). Nemo chats about her own international career which came to a close two weeks ago. She talks about the experience of her second start for Ireland playing world champions USA in California. As a result facing up to the likes of Megan Raphinoe, Carli Lloyd & Abby Wambach.

Reid Burke discusses her experience of struggling to break into the international starting side. Niamh talks about how having a player of the quality of Emma Byrne’s ahead of her in the pecking order reduced her own opportunities but became a massive learning opportunity for her.

The keeper explains her reasons for turning down opportunities to move abroad to further her football career and outlines the harsh reality of the finances within the women’s game.

Cork City Captain Becky Cassin (35:03) joins to talk about her own strike from the opening weekend of the league. Carlow IT graduate Becky chats about her late equaliser in Galway ten days ago which reached tens of thousands of eyeballs. She discusses the immediate impact of streaming games and the attention that brings, explaining her own experience of her phone hopping as soon as she returned to the dressing room.

Rathdrum native Becky and Stephanie swap stories of their mutual time in the Girls Football Academy in Kilcoole. Becky outlines her memories of looking up to Stephanie and Aine O’Gorman as an impressional youngster starting out.

The 24 year old midfielder also chat’s about her time in Carlow IT & playing in the pink of Wexford Youths. Her experience at Turners Cross as part of her college placement at Cork City. Her familiarity with the club made it a really easy decision to accept when the call from Rónán Collins arrived.

Finally, Stephanie (53:06) chats about her disappointment of missing out on the finalised Irish squad.
