Liam Kerrigan set for Italian switch

UCD manager Andy Myler has confirmed that ROI U21 international Liam Kerrigan is joining Serie B side Como 1907.

The news was reported by Eric White of BBC Radio Foyle last night following UCD’s 1-0 loss to Derry City in Belfield.

Kerrigan has impressed for the Students despite their position at the foot of the Premier Division table. The Sligo native has made 19 appearances for the Students this season and has also started the last two Irish U21 international fixtures.

The side he’s joining, generally known as Como, just finished 13th in Serie B and play their home games at the 13,000 capacity Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

They were recently promoted to Serie B from Serie C, just five years after the club were declared bankrupt under their previous guise of Como.

But they are a club on the rise, with their current boss Giacomo Gattuso spearheading their journey up the table.

The Italian side have been likely keeping an eye on Kerrigan’s international exploits. Kerrigan scored in the 3-1 win vs Montenegro and impressed in the 4-1 loss to Italy in Ascoli, despite the scoreline.

Kerrigan becomes the fifth Irish youngster to make to move to Italy, following Kevin Zefi (Inter), Cathal Heffernan (Milan) and James Abankwah and Festy Ebosele (Udinese).
