Match Report

Three-goal win for Wexford over Cork

A routine win for Wexford Youths over Cork City saw them keep the pace in the race for the WNL title in Ferrycarrig Park tonight.

A brace from Kylie Murphy supplemented by strikes from Sinead Taylor and Ellen Molloy did the job. At the other end, Eva Mangan scored a consolation goal for Cork.

Five minutes later and Murphy nearly found another. The ball was played to Edel Kennedy who put Murphy through with a wonderful first time flick. Abby McCarthy had something to say however, rushing off her line to squander the chance. The first of many of these instances for McCarthy.

The hosts wasted no time getting started in this one. Five minutes in they managed to latch onto some poor play at the back from City, a theme that continued throughout the game. After a small back and forth to win possession on the edge of the area, the ball fell to Kylie Murphy. The midfielder hit it first time and found the top corner. They never looked back from this moment on.

Cork had few chances but one came in the 16th minute when last week’s hero Christina Dring found herself in on goal. Della Doherty however caught up and with a sublime tackle put it behind for a corner that produced nothing.

It stayed quiet until the 41st minute when Murphy doubled the score. A shot was spilled by Abby McCarthy, who wasn’t able to collect her loose ball before one of her defenders attempted a clearance. The clearance only found Murphy just inside the area, who found the top corner with her strike. Another good finish, but Cork will be very disappointed with the defending.

Next big chance came in the 50th minute when the Leesiders once again gave away possession which allowed Murphy from short range to attempt her hattrick. McCarthy once again was on the spot to deny her. This could’ve looked been very ugly for Cork if it wasn’t for McCarthy.

The game was sealed with half an hour to go. Sinead Taylor was played through on goal and wrapped her foot around it first time from just outside the area, finding the bottom right. Another fine finish in a game full of them.

A minute later another was added. The ball found its way to Ellen Molloy, who teed herself up for the volley. The shot was straight at McCarthy, who let it through her grasp and couldn’t prevent it from crossing the line. A poor mistake that didn’t reflect her overall game.

Cork got their consolation eight minutes from time. Some nice link up play on the left allowed Eva Mangan to get the ball just inside the area and find the top corner. Something for the visitors to take into next week.

For Wexford, they keep their place in the title race and the unbeaten streak continues. For City, it was a fine display that saw them simply outplayed by one of the leagues best.

  • Full time and it's a 4-1 win for the hosts. A routine win that sees them keep the pace near the top of the table.

  • 93'

McEvitt had a chance to add another for Cork but hit wide. Proved to be the last kick of the game.

  • 82'

They're replaced by Emma Walker, Maeve Williams and Freya DeMange.

  • 82'

The hosts start to empty the bench. Sinead Taylor, Kiev Gray and Aoibheann Clancy make way.

  • 82'

Mangan pulls one back. Hit one from the edge of the area and Cork have a consolation.

  • 80'

Another very good save from McCarthy. Edel Kennedy bombed down the left and played a ball into Kylie Murphy for the hattrick, nut McCarthy was quick off her line to squash the chance. A good evening for her, despite the scoreline.

  • 74'

    She's replaced by Tiff Taylor.

  • 74'

Now a sub for Cork. Ciara McNamara comes off.

  • 70'

They are replaced by Conlon and Craven.

  • 70'

Double sub for the hosts. Rossiter and Frawley make way.

  • 61'

Another one! This time it's Ellen Molloy who hits it on the volley and it just crosses the line from far out. McCarthy in goals would like that one back. A cruel moment for a keeper who has had a good game.

  • 60'

Half an hour to go and it looks all over. Sinead Taylor wraps her foot around a through ball first time outside the box and curls it into the bottom right. A very tidy finish.

  • 56'

To be replaced by Kate O'Donovan and Nathalie O'Brien.

  • 56'

Double sub for Cork. Lauren Singleton and Leah Murphy make way.

  • 50'

Cork nearly conceded a third to Murphy for the hattrick but her shot is saved by McCarthy. Got away with needlessly giving away possession again.

  • 48'

Spell of pressure from Cork but they let Wexford off the hook.

  • 46'

Here we go. City get us back underway.

  • 45'

Second half kickoff is imminent as the teams come back out.

  • 45'

Half time and it's looking like it'll be a routine one for the hosts. Kylie Murphy's brace has them ahead and they were two good finishes, but came from needless Cork errors. Will need a huge turnaround from Cork in the second half to alter this result.

  • 41'

Goal! Kylie Murphy gets her and Wexford's second after a tidy finish. Cork will be disappointed with the defending, however.

  • 35'

Eabha O'Mahony lofted in a dangerous free and Ciara McNamara got on the end of it, but sent it over. Poor set piece defending from the hosts.

  • 31'

Another good save from Abby McCarthy. Was quick off her line to deny Sinead Taylor after an over the top pass behind the City defence.

  • 16'

Christina Dring burst into the area with a real chance at goal, but Della Doherty recovered well and made a sublime tackle. Ensuing corner produced nothing.

  • 13'

Murphy was being tended to after an awkward fall, but luckily can continue.

  • 10'

Big save from McCarthy who was quick off her line to prevent Murphy from adding another. A great touch from Edel Kennedy made the chance.

  • 9'

Cork had given away possession cheaply high up and paid the price. The ball fell to Murphy on the edge of the area and she took it first time.

  • 5'

Goal! Wexford get going and it's Kylie Murphy with an outside the box shot to put the hosts one nil up.

  • And we're off, Wexford get us underway.

  • Kickoff is imminent.

  • Both lineups are now in.

  • Cork on the other hand only have one win all season. They will have to be at their very best to get a result tonight.

  • Wexford come into this one in great form, having lost only once all year and winning their last four. With Shelbourne hammering Treaty earlier and Peamount playing bottom of the league Athlone however, they need to maintain a high standard to keep pace with their two title rivals.

  • Hello and welcome to finalwhistle.ie for tonight's WNL clash between Wexford Youths and Cork City, I'm Sean Comber and I'll be updating you on this one throughout the evening.
