Wexford hat-trick dismantles Cabinteely
Ian Ryan will be brimming with confidence after watching his Wexford FC side dismantle Cabinteely 3-0 in the first round of the FAI Cup at Ferrycarrig Park this evening.
Goals from Kyle Robinson, Jack Doherty and Jack Moylan helped Wexford to their second win of the season in all competitions.
The opening half hour was a cagey affair with neither side producing any clear-cut chances.
The game’s first real chance fell to Wexford. A Paul Cleary cross presented ]Robinson with an open goal, but the St.Pats loanee sent the ball over the bar.
Robinson would redeem himself just minutes later, when Doherty outmuscled Jack Hudson inside the box before cutting the ball back across the face of goal. This time Robinson kept the ball on the ground and gave Wexford the lead.
Ian Ryan’s men dominated the remaining 10 minutes of the first-half. Five minutes after Robinson’s opener, Jack Moylan was fouled in the Cabinteely box. On his 50th appearance for Wexford, Doherty converted from the spot to double the score.
Moylan would be involved in the third goal as well, this time scoring. The Bohemians loanee went on a solo run from the centre circle, beating three players in the process, before smashing the ball past Cabo goalkeeper Michael Quinn.
It was Wexford’s pair of Jacks that caused havoc all game for Cabinteely. Doherty even managed to score two more times, both were offside.
The away side made four changes at half-time, the most impactful being Niall Byrne. He almost found himself on the scoresheet, with one of his crosses being deflected onto the Wexford post.
Cabinteely came close a few times in the second-half. Jimmy Corcoran was forced into making a great save from a Keith Dalton free-kick, before tackling Ben Feeney in a one-on-one situation.
Pat Devlin’s side continue their losing streak, taking it to six games now. As for Ryan’s charges, tonight’s result sees them advance to the second round of the cup. All eyes will be back on the First Division next week as Cabinteely host Bray Wanderers, while Wexford await the arrival of Galway United.
