Match Report
Waterford stun Dundalk to reach last four of the cup
A Phoenix Patterson wonder-strike sealed a 3-2 FAI Cup quarter-final win for Waterford over top-flight Dundalk at a lively RSC this evening to see the Blues progress to the competition's semi-final stage for a second consecutive year.
Patterson was masterful throughout and led Waterford's fight back after they conceded early through a strange Paul Martin own-goal in the tenth minute.
A spectacular Shane Griffin volley would see Waterford back into contention on the half-hour mark and Darragh Power sent the Blues ahead before half-time after Wassim Aouachria laid off a Patterson free-kick for the fullback in the Lilywhite's area.
The Munster side would dominate the second half and Patterson secured the victory when he cut in from the right and shot into the top-left corner on 65 minutes.
Six minutes of injury time would see Waterford become open at the back and Dundalk would get a goal back through Keith Ward but their late push was not enough.
The defeat sees Dundalk fail to progress to an FAI Cup semi-final for the first time since 2014 as their recent run of poor from continues.
The Lilywhites took the lead early on when Paul Doyle sent a rocket toward the Blues' goal from long-range, forcing Waterford's keeper Paul Martin to dive to halt a certain goal. Unfortunately for Martin the ball diverted downward from his crossbar and bounced in at the far post.
Patterson would lead his side's charge back into the game after the 25-minute mark, and the Blues did start to seriously threaten.
The winger used his pace to run onto a through ball on 25 minutes only to be denied by an excellent covering tackle from Lewis Macari. Moments later the Scot had a curled attempt drift just too high of the Dundalk goal.
The home side equalised on 30 minutes when an Aouachria cross was defended by Dundalk and looped high, allowing Shane Griffin to run and skillfully volley it low to the right of Shepperd.
Waterford pushed on and Power sent them ahead with his point-blank strike before half-time, much to the delight of the sizeable home support.
The home supporters' night would only get better in the second period after Patterson extended their side's lead and chances continued to come as Dundalk scrambled at the back and failed to return fire until far too late.
