Match Report

Quick-fire UCD go top

Three goals in nine minutes saw UCD came back from a two-goal deficit to go top of the First Division tonight, with a hard-earned win over Treaty United in Belfield.

This looked unlikely heading for half-time as the visitors dominated the early exchanges of this contest.

The students showed great resolve after a terrific first half performance from the Limerick outfit.

Treaty exerted huge pressure on UCD, completely disrupting their rhythm and style of play, with Sean McSweeney and Kieran Hanlon on target.

However, quick-fire goals at the start of the half from Dara Keane, Sean Brennan and Harvey O'Brien put UCD in the ascendancy; and despite huge pressure, Treaty couldn’t find an equaliser.

Charlie Fleming was a thorn in the side for the Students from the off. Treaty had the first chance of the match in the 10th minute, as a cross from a corner landed nicely for McSweeney who struck low and hard; but it was well saved.

A minute later, the early pressure told as Mark Ludden, who impressed all night, was taken down in the penalty area, after great work from Dean George on the left wing. McSweeney stepped up to smash it home for the Shannonsiders.

Treaty continued to pressure UCD, while playing out from the back with confidence. Their high-energy game was working well in nullifying the hosts.

Ten minutes before the break, that pressure forced Todd to lose possession and Hanlon deftly chipped the goalkeeper from outside the area.

It was a sublime finish from the striker to give the Treaty men a 2-0 lead. However, just before the half-time whistle in the 45th minute, good diagonal passing by the students found Brennan on the right wing, who passed to the on-running Keane in the box and he finished to give UCD hope going into the break.

Treaty attacked immediately on the restart and Mark Dignam was a relieved man as he headed the ball on to his own crossbar.

The Limerick side brought an increased physicality to the game, but as they tried to double-mark Whelan, he was able to find other team-mates in space.

This reaped dividends in the 50th minute when he set up Brennan to score the equaliser. Within three minutes, O’Brien scored as he intercepted a loose pass in midfield, continued his run forward, finding space in the area to shoot and make it 3-2 to UCD.

Ludden again proved dangerous for Treaty on the left wing, despite their best efforts in the final half hour, they couldn’t break down the stubborn UCD defence.

Todd was a noteworthy feature of this good rear-guard action. The students maintained their lead despite ferocious work-rate and desire from Treaty who threw the kitchen sink at them in the closing stages.
