Match Report

Cobh hold out against UCD

Cobh Ramblers grabbed a very important 2-1 win visiting UCD, courtesy of Jake Hegarty's brace as they put an end to the student's invincibility during a great spell behind closed doors.

Colm Whelan did no more than reduce matters from a second half penalty.

This result was an arrow through the heart of the Students' fans, who came back to the stands for the first time in more than one year to see their team produce their worst result of the season playing at the Belfield Bowl.

The final whistle saw a punishing result for the hosts, as they were only team fighting to change the score after a disappointing first half, although without the right finish to delight their fans with a victory.

Both teams left all the action for the second 45 minutes; it paid off as we saw the score change enough times to bring uncertainty to the game.

The visitors came with the first attempt of the match. Killian Cooper saw his effort going slightly off the right post.
Liam Kerrigan replied shortly after with an audacious powerful shot, as the ball went off close to the bar.

After that matters turned into a fight in the middle for possession of the ball, with a general lack of inspiration upfront the break came, with both sides yet to find the net.

It would have been fascinating to hear what Stuart Ashton said to his players in the dressing room, because it brought instantaneous results as Jake Hegarty built a brace in just two minutes, and with two similar plays.

The forward brought the same inspiration from two weeks ago, where he found his first senior goal, and sent the ball in with two cool finishes, after coming face-to-face with the keeper Lorcan Healy.

The Students struggled to bring a reaction, but ultimately they found it. Adam Lennon got tackled inside the box, the referee walked to the white circle, and Whelan delivered from the penalty spot to put UCD back in the game.

They brought all they had until the final embers, however without the desired results; Ramblers held out for a much needed three points.
