Match Report

Waterford return home from Shannonside with major advantage going into 2nd leg

A Phoenix Patterson inspired Waterford took a huge step towards the next play-off round with a 4-1 win over Treaty United on Shannonside.

Treaty United would finish with 10-men following the dismissal of Colin Conroy, while Junior Quitirna gave Danny Searle’s side a buffer for the second leg. An own-goal from Sean Guerins compounded a forgettable night for Treaty.

The in-form Patterson helped himself to a first-half brace. His end-of-season form helped Waterford into second and the home side couldn’t get a handle on his movement here.

Like last season, Tommy Barrett’s side were unable to make an impact in the first leg, having lost 3-0 at home to UCD 12 months ago.

Played before the largest crowd of the season in Limerick, United were behind early and have struggled to recover from losing positions this season. They claimed just three points, all draws, from losing positions this season.

Patterson, who already netted 17 First Division goals this season, had another after just five minutes. He raced onto a wonderful pass from Yassine En-Neyah, and took a heavy touch before drilling low to the net, from a tight angle.

His second also saw him played in by Yassine En-Neyah. This time, more central than the opener, he powered beyond Jack Brady who was advancing and got a touch. All this inside the opening 30 minutes.

Waterford, who brought a considerable away following, were in dreamland when awarded a first-half penalty. Junior Quitirna was fouled by Willie Armshaw but saw his penalty wayward, rebounding off the post.

Enda Curran halved the deficit when he smashed home a penalty just after the hour mark. Lee Devitt was fouled by Tunmise Sobowale much to the dismay of the visitors.

With Treaty in the ascendancy, they went close to an equaliser through Armshaw, who was denied by Paul Martin. Just seconds later, Colin Conroy received a second yellow card after a forceful challenge in the midfield.

This was compounded by a Marc Ludden mistake which allowed Junior Quitirna in to score, pouncing on a poor touch to fire into the bottom corner.

There was time for one more, in stoppage time, as Timi Sobowale saw his cross turned into his own net by Sean Guerins.

The second leg takes place at the RSC on Saturday evening, with the Blues the firmest of favourites to set up a clash with Longford Town or Galway United.
