McEleney delivers for Dundalk in extra-time

Dundalk have began their defence of the FAI Cup with a 1-0 extra-time win over a valiant Treaty United side in the Markets Field this afternoon.

It took until the 104th minute for Dundalk to find the net, Patrick McEleney with the strike, as the ball deflected off a Limerick man, and went high into the net past Tadhg Ryan.

The Shannonsiders finished the game with ten men after Anthony O’Donnell was shown a straight red.

The visitors were made work for their win over 120 minutes, Treaty never let the title of underdogs let them down, the hosts doing all they could to take the game to penalties in the dying embers of the contest.

Over the 90 minutes prior to extra-time, both sides had attempts at goal, but neither could find the all important breakthrough, it would be McEleney’s strike before the interval of ET, that would end the Treaty United fairytale.

The Lillywhites are only the second side, to taste victory at the markets field this season, Galway United holding the mantle before today’s victory.

Dundalk had the first chance of the afternoon, Sean Murray picking out Darragh Leahy with a free from the right, but his header flew over the bar.

Tadhg Ryan was fantastic all afternoon for his side, producing a fine stop to deny Hang Jeong-Woo. His corresponding number in the opposite goal Abibi, made a great save to keep out a Joel Coustrain shot.

The rest of the game went the way of the visitors, David McMillan had a great chance to open the scoring, as he was found in space in the box, but his header was weak to bother the keeper

The Limerick shot stopper Tadhg Ryan, was on hand again to ensure two further extra periods, as he made two fantastic saves to keep the score-line level, the second save keeping out a Will Patching free.

It would eventually be Dundalk's day in extra-time, McEleney’s deflected effort, putting them ahead in the 104th minute.

Treaty were down to ten men late on as O’Donnell saw red, for a rash challenge on Jeong-Woo. Dundalk had a late chance to make it 2-0, but Tadhg Ryan again produced a fine stop to deny McEleney.
