Match Report

Galway topple Treaty

Treaty United’s unbeaten record at home came to an end this evening at Markets Field, following a 1-0 loss to Galway United in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

First-half substitute, Padraic Cunningham headed home for The Tribesmen as they extended their winning streak to three games in succession.

Cunningham’s goal came early in the second-half and somewhat against the run of play. Treaty enjoyed the majority of possession in the first-half, however both sides relied heavily on long balls to break down the opposition defence.

Marc Ludden and Kevin Lynch were at the heart of everything for Treaty in the opening 45 minutes, however Matthew McKevitt struggled to find the target for the Limerick side.

The first-half was stunted due to injuries with Treaty having to replace goalkeeper Tadhg Ryan with their second choice Shane Cusack.

Meanwhile Galway were forced into making a change when Wilson Waweru went down following a challenge from Anthony O’Donnell.

Waweru’s replacement, Cunningham, would prove to be a useful substitution when he headed home a Conor O’Keefe cross to give Galway the lead.

From then on Galway seemed happy to just sit back and allow Treaty to come forward. Kevin Lynch took over in the final third for Treaty, with everything running through him. However, McKevitt struggled again to finish opportunities, going close on several occasions.

Galway chances became scarce in the second-half as The Tribesmen relied on counter-attacking football. Cunningham had a chance to double his tally for the evening, but his shot from a tight angle soared over the bar.

Treaty attempted to use deep crosses from the likes of Marc Ludden, Matt Keane and Charlie Fleming. However, few of these managed to find anyone and the set-piece delivery from Treaty was sub-par this evening.

The result means that Galway will remain in 4th, now four points clear of Bray Wanderers. While Treaty slip into 3rd, overtaken by UCD thanks to goal difference. Treaty will look to try and bounce back when they face Cork City next week and hope that Galway will do them a favour when they travel to UCD.

  • Meanwhile, The Tribesmen find themselves in 4th, level on points with 3rd place UCD. Manager John Caulfield was very pleased following last week's 1-0 win against Cabinteely and he will be hoping that his side can maintain their push for promotion with a win here tonight.

  • Treaty United find themselves just 8 points behind league leaders Shelbourne and will be hoping to continue their good run of form tonight, following their 2-0 win over Cobh Ramblers last week.

  • There are only a handful of changes in either sides' lineup. For Galway, Alex Murphy is replaced by Stephen Walsh and for Treaty, Matt McKevitt comes in for Kieran Hanlon, while Sean Guerins and Joel Coustrain miss out.

  • Hello and welcome to Finalwhistle.ie's coverage of the SSE Airtricity First Division fixture between Treaty United and Galway United. Today's game is being played in front of a crowd of 100 people at Markets Field in Limerick and kicks off at 7:45pm
