Match Report
Peamount strong against Shels
In a cagey affair Peamount United were able to hold on to their two-goal lead for the entire second half to secure the win and put them tied atop the table with Shelbourne, following an entertaining contest at PRL Park.
The Peas relied on goals from Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and Áine O’Gorman in a first half that was largely dominated by Shels. O’Gorman had the pick of the goals with her effort coming off a perfect struck 20-yard volley and curled perfectly into the Shels net.
Shelbourne will feel hard done by the result considering how much possession they had. Even after Ciara Grant was able to pull one back, they were unable to find the equaliser as Peamount held out to hand Shelbourne their first loss of the season.
The game began with some cagey football with Shels looking to play the ball vertically, to try and unleash the pace of Emily Whelan. However, Peamount were more than capable to the task and were happy to watch their opponents continue to play speculative ball after ball over the top in hopes of hitting gold.
Shelbourne’s first real shot in anger came in the 17th minute where they had a free kick cleared directly to the feet of Mia Dodd, who took a touch before smashing her shot just past the post.
If there is to be anything said of Peamount’s first half it’s that when they finally did get a chance on the ball, they made the most of it.
As Shelbourne struggled to clear a throw in near their own corner flag, O’Gorman swooped in to steal the ball before swinging a beautiful cross into the box. Eleanor Ryan-Doyle’s first attempt may have been stifled, but she was not to be denied as she pounced again to poke the ball into the back of the net to give United the lead.
That first goal gave Peamount the confidence to spring into action and five minutes later they looked to be on track for their second, as Pearl Slattery brought down O’Gorman in the box for a penalty. Eleanor Ryan-Doyle stepped up, but Amanda Budden was more than equal to the task. She was able to get down to her right to deny the United striker her second goal of the game.
Whilst Budden was able to keep out Peamount for that effort, she was completely helpless for the next effort. O’Gorman’s perfectly struck volley curled past Budden and nestled into the bottom corner of the Shelbourne net, giving the Peas a 2-0 lead.
Now two goals behind the Reds started to attack with a bit more verve and were unlucky not to get one back just before half time as Saorise Noonan’s point-blank header was put over the bar by Naoisha McAloon.
The second half had a freaky feeling to it as both teams seemed to switch playstyles. United started looking for more direct passing routes up front, while Shelbourne seemed content to work the ball on the ground and look for their opening.
That gap though was proving harder and harder to find for Shelbourne. They were given a brief moment of joy as Jessie Stapleton managed to put the ball into the Peas net, but it was disallowed due to Stapleton being offside.
The Reds continued to push onwards and as the game progressed into the final third, they were able to finally find a way past Naoisha McAloon, with Ciara Grant pouncing on a McAloon save to pull one back for the Tolka Park outfit.
Shelbourne were unable to make anything more though, as Peamount United held out for the victory that now sets them level on points with Shelbourne atop the Women’s National League.

Peamount make their final change as Stephanie Roche is taken off for Sadhbh Doyle.
GOAL! Shelbourne get one back as Emily Whelan's shot from outside the box isn't held by Naoisha McAloon and Ciara Grant pounces to get one back for Shelbourne.
Peamount decide to make their second change as Megan Smith-Lynch is replaced by Becky Watkins.
Megan Smyth-Lynch goes a bit too aggressive on one challenge and after Peamount had escaped punishment for a number of fouls the referee finally reaches for his pocket for a yellow card.
A beautiful delivery from a free kick for Shelbourne is met at the back post by Jessie Stapleton. However Stapleton strayed offside and her excellent finish is ruled out.
Jessica Gargan's shot goes sailing over as Shelbourne continue to push foward. They've been much more positive going foward this half but have yet to put a shot on target.
Shelbourne decide to switch it up as Mia Dodd comes off for Noelle Murphy.
Peamount make the switch as Tiegan Ruddy comes on for Eleanor Ryan-Doyle.
The Peas have come out this half looking to play the same vertical passing style that Shelbourne were trying in the first half and are having similar struggles.
AND WE'RE OFF! Second Half is underway with Shelbourne looking to find a way back into this game.
HALF TIME! Eleanor Ryan-Doyle & Aine O'Gorman's strikes separate the two teams at the half. Peamount will feel fairly good about their lead whilst Shelbourne will feel like they should have gotten more out of the possession that they've had this half.
Shelbourne have woken up with Saoirse Noonan getting on the end of a perfect cross but Naoisha McAloon is up to the task making a fantastic reflex save to deny what should have been a goal.
GOAL! A beautiful finish from Aine O'Gorman as the ball falls to her just outside the box after a Peamount free kick is cleared. O'Gorman perfectly strikes it first time as it curls in to the far corner of Amanda Budden's net.
SAVED! Amanda Budden gets down smartly to deny Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and keep the score at 1-0.
PENALTY! Pearl Slattery brings down Ainé O'Gorman and receives a yellow for it.
Peamount have been relatively quiet for the most part but it just shows the attacking talent on this team that if you give them so much as a half chance then they will make you pay.
GOAL! Peamount pounce on a mistake from a Shelbourne not clearing their lines from a throw in which allows Ainé O'Gorman to take possession and scamper down the right wing before putting in a beautiful cross that Shelbourne were unable to clear allowing Eleanor Ryan-Doyle to swoop in and pounce for the opening score of the game.
Peamount are finally able to get a foothold in Shelbourne's half to get a corner. Della Doherty is able to find space in the box but her header from the corner goes wide.
A Shelbourne free kick outside outside of the Peamount Box ends up falling to Mia Dodd who has her long range effort going just past the post.
Shels best football is coming down the right side with Emily Whelan causing trouble with her pace.
Both teams playing fairly cagey to begin but Peamount are pressing Shels back 4 hard and not giving them a moment on the ball.
We're off! The Title Rematch Begins!
