Doyle Winner Puts Peas Six Clear At The Summit

Sadhbh Doyle struck with minutes to go in Tallaght Stadium, giving Peamount United all three points in a cagey game between the top two, giving Peas a six point margin at the summit heading into the season break.

It was hard to predict a winner from this tie, as the teams were deadlocked for such a long spell in the tie, Doyle’s 83rd minute winner the deciding factor in edging Peamount further ahead in the title race.

A draw was how the game played out earlier this season in PRL Park, but Peamount extended their unbeaten streak against Rovers in the Women’s Division, the first loss Rovers have taken all season, in front of a record attendance of 1,464.

A very open and scrappy contest between the two sides fighting for top spot, attacking with intent but either could turn the screw to create an early chance at goal to cause a goalkeeper to pull off a save.

Heavily dominated by possession in the opening quarter of an hour, the home side were holding the ball a lot more than their adversaries, but Peamount’s defence notbally Jetta Berill and Chloe Moloney were in great form to sheppard away the danger.

The visitors had the first real chance of the tie, Lauryn O'Callaghan crossed into the area where Sadhbh Doyle rose to head toward goal but it lacked power and Amanda Budden secured possession.

Rovers too were creating chances, an ex Peas link up almost brought a chance, Aine O'Gorman sent in a cross but Alannah McEvoy couldn't head it goal bound, the cross took a deflection and Rovers took the resulting corner but it came to nothing as Niamh Reid Burke was fouled.

Peamount went up the other end and looked to create a chance, the ball looked to have struck the arm of O’Gorman outside the D near the Rovers box, but despite the protests from the visitors nothing was awarded.

A spell of pressure from the home side, brought their first shot of the contest, a snapshot from Savannah McCarthy as she capitalised on Peamount's defence unable to clear a corner, but it was easy for Reid-Burke to gather.

Rovers started the second half with another cross from O’Gorman, she had combined well with Jess Hennessy but her cross was aimed for Abbie Larkin, but she just could not race to gather possession.

Again for large parts of the second half it was a possession based game, with chances coming and going but nothing of merit to change the scoreboard, it remained a tight game where a winner looked tough to predict.

The best chance the Hoops came to breaking the deadlock came from a Jess Gargan cross, she raced along the right wing, had time to stop and float a ball in aimed for Jamie Thompson, it eluded Reid-Burke and Thompson headed over the bar with an empty goal in front of her.

It was the league leaders who had the final say, Erin McLaughlin raced onto a loose ball that the Rovers defence failed to gather, she played a ball through for Doyle, who slipped a curling effort under Budden to break the deadlock after 83 minutes.

  • The teams are out in Tallaght

  • Since the league's inaugural season back in 2011-2012, Peamount have never lost to Shamrock Rovers, they overcame the Hoops, 1-0 3-2 and 5-1, in their first season, that was followed by a 6-0 and 10-2 win the following season, before the 2013-14 season saw them prevail 6-2 and 3-0, that game at the end of the 2013, the last for ten years until Rovers lined out in PRL Park in April.

  • Three ahead of their opponents and six ahead of Shels the next challenger in waiting, they cannot afford any slip ups, coming off four wins on the trot, they are in rip roaring form ahead of what is a must win tie for them to keep confidence up.

  • A draw would be enough for the Peas to remain top of the table ahead of the break, but James O'Callaghan's side will know a win in Tallaght this evening, would be a big statement that they are here to win a title this season.

  • Both teams have four wins and a draw from their last five games, but the Hoops women are still to taste defeat in the league this season, in all of their home games thus far they have bagged three points, making Tallaght Stadium a real fortress.

  • Peamount make two changes from their eight goal thriller with Athlone last week, Niamh Reid-Burke is back in goal as Niamh Coombes fails to make the squad, Jetta Berrill replaces Ellen Dolan who also does not make the squad this afternoon

  • The Hoops Women make one change from last weeks 0-0 draw with Bohs, Jamie Thompson replaces Abby Tuthill, while Stephaine Zambra is back on the bench, she has not had minutes since the 6-0 win over Treaty in March here last appearance in the squad since being out with injury, another addition to the Rovers bench is Lauryn McCabe, sister of Irish international Katie.

  • Tallaght Stadium plays host to a huge top of the table clash in the Women's Premier Division as Shamrock Rovers host Peamount United, the final game before the league pauses until August, Peas lead by three in the standings, with Shels picking up points today, both these sides certainly cannot afford a slip up, my name is Diarmuid Kearney and I will be reporting on the action in Tallaght
