Beirne Brilliance Snatches Points For The Peas
On the resumption of the Women’s League of Ireland season, a late wondergoal by Dearbhaile Beirne snatched a home win for Peamount United over Bohemians, maintaining their lead over second-placed Shelbourne.
The win means the league leaders maintain their six-point lead at the top of the table over rivals Shelbourne, who also secured victory on the first day back with a 3-1 win over Treaty United.
Both sides started the game brightly but it was Peamount that would have the more clear-cut chances in the opening exchanges.
Lauryn O’Callaghan and Becky Watkins looked dangerous down the right flank as the home side began to assert themselves in the game.
An early corner kick fell at the feet of Peamount captain Karen Duggan and was able to get a strike away but the opposing captain Rachael Kelly got down sharply to palm the ball away.
The right side of the Peamount attack was causing a lot of issues for the visitors and another corner won from the work of O’Callaghan and Watkins caused carnage in the Bohemians' box again but the scores remained level.
The deadlock was almost broken in comical fashion as a pass back from O’Callaghan rolled under the feet of Niamh Reid-Burke and looked destined to roll in.
The Peamount keeper managed to scramble the ball away from the goal line, although perhaps not legally, and was called into action immediately to save a close-range shot by new Bohemians signing, Katie Malone.
The home side composed themselves after this moment of madness and created chances for Sadhbh Doyle, Kate Mooney and Jess Fitzgerald but none caused Kelly any panic.
The best chance of the first half came from a Bohs free-kick when Mia Dodd crossed to the back post to find the towering figure of Lisa Murphy. Her header crashed against the stanchion of the net and the sides finished the first half as they started.
Peamount dominated the early stages of the first half but were forced to resort to long-range efforts from Duggan and McLaughlin in search of a goal.
Bohemians had their own heart-in-mouth moment when a clearance out of defence was blocked into the path of McLaughlin. The Peamount attacker flashed a shot across the face of the goal but couldn’t break the deadlock as the shot trickled wide.
Mooney also had a chance thanks to a deflection when Duggan’s shot from outside the box rebounded into her path in the box, but again the strike on goal was saved comfortably by Kelly.
The game looked destined to end in all square but a moment of magic from Leitrim native Dearbhaile Beirne snatched a win for the home side.
The ball broke to Beirne nicely on the edge of the box. Beirne then cut in from the right and unleashed a rasping strike which flew high over the head of Kelly in the Bohemians' goal – an unstoppable shot.
Bohemians pushed late on for an equaliser but Peamount stood strong, securing a win in what is a perfect restart to their title charge.

FULL TIME: Peamount United 1-0 Bohemians
WHAT A GOAL! Beirne cuts in from the left and fires a stunning strike over the head of Kelly in the Bohs' goal. The keeper had no chance.
Lovely picks up the first yellow card of the game for the away side.
O'Callaghan does well to make space in the box and fire a shot on goal Kelly saves. Moments later the full-back fires from long-range but again the Bohs keeper gets down well to save.
Peamount make their first change of the game with Mooney being replaced by Ellen Dolan
Bohemians make another change. Niamh Prior comes on in place of McGrath.
McLaughlin latches onto a deflected shot by Duggan to strike at the goal but Kelly saves comfortably.
Mooney capitalises on a blocked clearance just outside the Bohemians' box and flashes a shot across the face of the goal but it dribbles by the back post and out for a goal kick.
Very nice defending from Lovely as she shepherds Duggan out of play.
Bohs make a change, Burdis comes off in place of Rachel Doyle.
McLaughlin tries her luck from range and her dipping effort is a lot closer but still off target.
Duggan blazes over from range with the first chance of the second half
And we are back underway.
HALF TIME: Peamount 0-0 Bohemians
Fitzgerald plays an amazing pass down the wing for McLaughlin and crosses for Watkins at the back post, but her header is slightly too high and misses the target.
And from the resulting free-kick Dodd whips a ball to the back post and finds the head of Murphy. Her powerful header hits the stanchion. Very close.
O'Callaghan gets the first yellow of the game for a hefty tackle on Burdis.
A breaking ball in the box makes its way to McLaughlin but her final effort is tame.
Mooney takes the ball with her back to the goal and swivels to loft a pass to the onrushing Doyle. The Peamount number eight does well in hitting an outside of the foot shot but her effort is slightly off target.
Beirne breaks down the left and whips a ball in for Mooney who flicks a header towards goal. Watkins looks like she might nip in at the back post but Kelly claims the ball well.
Peamount are creating more going forward than the visitors but Bohemians are looking dangerous on the break. The first goal in this game is going to be very important.
A moment of madness from Reid-Burke as she lets a pass from O'Callaghan roll under her foot but does just enough to scramble the ball away. Malone looked certain to convert the rebound but the Peamount keeper made up for her error by saving at point-blank range.
Doyle has looked dangerous in the opening part of this game, this time setting Fitzgerald up for a long-range effort that sails wide of the Bohs goal.
Again the corner causes carnage in the Bohs penalty area but the ball is scrambled away to safety after a couple of attempts.
Tidy play between Watkins and O'Callaghan wins a corner for the home side.
Reid-Burke has had to be alert in the early stage of this game, and has been sharp off her line to deal with the balls in behind the defence.
The corner causes carnage in the box as the ball falls to Duggan to strike. Kelly gets down sharply to block the shot and keeps the sides level.
A neat pass by O'Callaghan set up another dangerous opportunity for Peamount but McLaughlin gets smothered on the edge of the box and the danger is cleared. Corner now for the home side.
A swift break by Peamount ends with a cross into the box by Watkins but nothing comes of the tidy play from the home side
Bohemians attack down the right through Craven but the ball is seen out of play by Maloney
