Match Report
Eleanor eloquent for Peas
A brace of goals from Eleanor Ryan-Doyle ensures that Peamount United continued their unbeaten run to the season and maintain an impressive series of wins that went back to the last season.
DLR Waves despite their endeavours, didn't show the promise that has been on display and were made for the ruthless attacking style of the away side.
They were also made to pay the penalty at Belfield as Aoife Brophy conceded a spot-kick that Ryan-Doyle ensured the victory with her second goal.
The first half got off to a blistering start with Peamount looking to show the hosts as to why they were aiming for their 14th straight league win.
Early indication for Peamount's attacking flair came courtesy of a fantastic strike from McCartan on the edge of the area. That effort forced a fantastic save from Eve Bandana who could only push it around the post.
The opening goal came from Ryan-Doyle who latched onto a fantastic cross from Aine O’Gorman to convert it with an excellently taken diving header.
Peamount continued to attack and a sweeping ball out from O'Gorman saw the ball fall to Smyth-Lynch who fed O'Gorman and she got the opportunity to strike on goal her effort flashed across the face of the Waves goal.
The Peas had an early penalty claim waved away as a goal-bound shot struck the arm of Katie Burdis but despite the protests, it was waved away. Badana was called into action once more to deny O'Gorman as his effort forced a smart save from the DLR’s custodian.
Peamount did get their penalty as Aoife Brophy felled Lucy McCartan in the area and the referee had no option to point to the spot. Ryan Doyle despatched the penalty sending the ball into the top right-hand corner.
She had another attempt on goal as she took the ball down on the edge of the area and her looping effort just went over Bandana’s bar.
As the game etched towards its conclusion, Stephanie Roche looked as if she had nabbed a third only for her effort to flash across the DLR Waves goal much to the relief of the home sides defence.
DLR Waves will see this as the lesson of Belfield as to what it takes to go to the next level in the Women's National League, for a side that was in the bottom half of the league last year, Graham Kelly’s side is on the up. They could be a side to make an impact yet.
