Peamount Secure Second WNL Title
Peamount United secured their second consecutive FAI Women's National League title with a battling performance in their final home game against their title rivals Shelbourne 3-1 in PRL Park this evening.
Highlights for the Pea's were stellar performances from captain double goalscorer Aine O'Gorman and some fine saves from goalkeeper Niamh Reid Burke turning around an early second half strike to lift the league trophy.
Both sides came into the game knowing a decisive victory for either team would end the league title challenge in favour of the winning side. Both sides including international experience in their ranks
Not surprisingly the story of the first half was mostly of nerves and two fine performances in goals for both sides with Niamh Reid Burke in particular showing why she has found her way back into the reckoning for the Irish International side.
While Peamount created more chances in the opening half, the better quality of those opportunities fell to Emily Whelan of the visiting side. Mostly ploughing a lone forrow up top for Shels she had plenty of service from the likes of Izzy Atkinson, Rebecca Cooke and Ciara Grant in the Red's midfield.
On the quarter hour mark a clever through ball from the lively Izzy Atkinson put Emily Whelan through one on one with the advancing Reid Burke who blocked her goal bound shot and cleared to safety.
It would be twenty minutes later when Whelan again found herself almost in the scoring zone but a brilliant last gasp challenge from Lauren O'Callaghan saw the ball rebound off Whelan for a goal kick which saw the pressure being lifted from the Peamount defence.
Just before the interval, Reid Burke found herself back in the action, diving at the feet of Whelan to intercept another great through ball from the Shels midfielders. It capped off a fine first half display from the experienced netminder.
The final move of the first half created the best chance for Peamount with great work from O'Callaghan and Aine O'Gorman feeding Stephanie Roche in the centre of the pitch. Roche's angled ball found Alannah McEvoy on the edge of the box but her shot was blocked by the lunge of Ciara Grant.
The teams were barely back on the pitch when Shelbourne took a blistering start with a fantastic run and strike from Emily Whelan straight from the kick off and despite Reid Burke getting her hand to the ball it nestled in the corner of the net to send the away side into raptures.
Peamount grew into the encounter and just before the hour mark a well placed header from Stephanie Roche saw Eleanor Ryan Doyle break into the box. Her attempts to go around Rachael Kelly in the Shels goal were foiled by a poor first touch and the outstretched leg and was cleared for a corner to the defending league champions. Shels managed to clear the resulting corner despite a little frantic defending in the six yard box.
The first substitution of the game saw Megan Smyth-Lynch and Saidhbh Doyle enter the fray as Lucy McCartan and the visibily injured Stephanie Roche made way on 65 minutes.
Aine O'Gorman played the captains role with a last ditch tackle on Rebecca Cooke who had been put free by a lofted pass from Whelan and found herself in acres of space but got closed down by the Irish international for the block. Reid Burke came out to claim the resulting corner in a crowded box.
Moments later O'Gorman turned provider when her run and cross was met by McEvoy who wasn't able to get her close range effort on target under pressure from Shels captain Pearl Slattery. Peamount upped the intensity and pushed more players forward in search of the equaliser they required.
Long range shots from Dearbhaile Beirne, Claire Walsh & Karen Duggan didn't overly bother Kelly in the Shels goal. Duggan picked up a knock during in her effort which resulted in a free kick on the edge of the Shels box. Pea's captain and the top scorer in the league Aine O'Gorman stepped up to bury the ball in the 72nd minute to set up a grandstand finale to the fixture.
A long ball from Jess Gargan over the top saw Emily Whelan close in on the Peamount box but once again Reid Burke cleaned up the situation upending the ball over the sideline and Whelan in the process.
Jess Glesson picked up an injury with fifteen minutes on the clock and Shels replaced her with the attack minded Alex Kavanagh.
She had barely set foot on the pitch when Karen Duggan got her head on a Megan Smyth-Lynch corner after some good work from Aine O'Gorman and the net bulged to complete a massive switch and put the Pea's in a decisive lead.
Try as they might Shels just weren't able to claw their way back into proceedings. A missed volley from Jessica Ziu and a fantastic save from Reid Burke from a half volley from Ciara Grant after the ball found it's way to her in a crowded Peamount box.
Not to be outdone Kelly found herself in the thick of it bravely getting her face in the way of a header from Duggan and intercepting the resulting corner.
Aine O'Gorman was to have the final say in the competition, securing the league title when a training ground set piece fell at her feet and she found the back of the net, seal the result and more than likeyl nail down the Golden Boot on a personal level.
