Match Report
Galway WFC bow out of WNL with defeat
Aine O Gorman’s Hatrick aided in Peamount's convincing win on the final day of the season in Eamonn Deacy Park.
First-half goals from Dearbhaile Beirne, Sadhbh Doyle, and two from O’Gorman saw the Peas leading at the break 4-0.
Galway struggled to make an impact in the second half as Aine O’Gorman and O’Hanlon settled the scoring at 6-0 on a final night for Galway
It was Peamount who got off the mark the quickest in what a wet and windy Eamonn Deacy park.
Both sides struggled throughout the first half with the wet playing surface as they tried to keep the ball on the grass and pass it around.
A brilliant piece of individual skill broke the deadlock after 13 minutes Dearbhaile Beirne struck the back of the net with a brilliant effort with the outside of her foot curling away from the keeper into the bottom corner, a great strike and there was more to come.
Aine O’Gorman found a second for the away side after 24 minutes her header looping over Abbiegayle Ronayne in goal 2-0 and the Dublin side well in control of the match.
Things got worse for Galway after 29 minutes a quick clever free kick from Stephanie Roche set Sadhbh Doyle clear on goal and she slotted home coolly and calmly bringing it to 3-0.
A Peamount corner on the 45th minute led to a soft penalty for the Peas and top scorer chaser Aine O’Gorman stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way harsh on Galway but the away side deserving their lead at half time 4-0
Peamount came out the second half much like the first on the front foot and looked dangerous with every attack.
Aine O’Gorman completed her hattrick on the 57th minute after the Peas stole the ball from Galway in their own half and Aine slotted home one on one with the keeper. This Goal cemented Aine’s position as top scorer in the league this campaign. Congratulations to her.
O Hanlon finished off the scoring after 62 minutes, her powerful strike too much for Abbiegayle Ronayne in the goal for Galway.
It was a scoreline to forget for Galway WFC but a historic night for the club as they close this chapter on the club. After 10 years in the WNL the club is closing its doors which provided a great outlet and opportunity for girls and women around the area to enjoy and take in the sport they love. It's not all gloom for Galway as the club will be replaced by Galway United but Galway WFC time has come to an end.
