Wexford snatch late point to setup final day showdown
An 89th minute Aine Walsh strike saw Wexford clutch a vital 3-3 draw with Peamount to stay in the WNL title race, after a pulsating clash at PRL park this evening.
Youths' Jess Lawler opened scoring in the fourth minute after she put pressure on Peas' centre-backs and intercepted a Chloe Moloney clearance to shoot past Niamh Reid-Burke.
With half an hour played, a lengthy stoppage ensued after Della Doherty endured a dislocated knee and Peas chased an equaliser after the game restarted.
Moloney made amends for her earlier mistake when she headed in a deflected Tara O'Hanlon corner moments after play resumed.
United took the lead in the second-half after Wexford's backline turned a troublesome Tara O'Hanlon cross into their own goal on 53 minutes.
The visitors hit back less than ten minutes later, when Kylie Murphy slipped into space in the Peas area and headed a free-kick delivery into goal.
As time ran down, Aine O'Gorman found Doyle in Youths' area and the forward's header saw United take the lead but Walsh's late leveller eliminated Peas from title contention.
Youths drop down to second but victory over Shels next week will earn them a fifth league honour.
Wexford got off to a flying start when Lawler netted early after chasing down Peas' backtracking centre-backs Moloney and Jetta Berrill.
A Moloney pass rebounded off of the unsuspecting Berrill and the defender's following clearance was blocked by Lawler, who then hit goal from close-range.
With Youths in the ascendancy, a pivotal moment arrived just before the half-hour mark, when Doherty emerged from a challenge on Aine O'Gorman with a dislocated knee.
When play eventually got back underway, Peas proved the more energetic and, knowingly or not, Moloney headed in after Nicola Sinnott first got her head to an O'Hanlon corner.
Another O'Hanlon delivery put them into the lead, after Wexford's Sinnott turned the ball toward her own goal and Orlatih Conlon's last ditch clearance came too late.
Kylie Murphy used all her experience to get her side back in the game, the forward peeled into space as Wexford delivered a free into the Peas area and she headed into the bottom left-corner.
Chances came at both ends although Peamount had the better, and they may have thought they had won it when Doyle headed O'Gorman's delivery into the ground and it bounced into goal.
As time ticked on, Wexford pushed for the equaliser they very much needed and fortunately for the visitors, Walsh made no mistake with her finish from inside the box.
