Match Report
Shels comfortable winners at the Bowl
Shelbourne took all three points despite not moving out of second gear against basement side UCD in Belfield this evening.
The Goals came from Jack Moylan, a long range JJ Lunney effort, a Sean Boyd penalty and an injury time effort from JR Wilson were enough for the reds to emerge with the win.
In truth Damien Duff’s charges never looked like losing this game and within three minutes Shels forced a turnover when Sean Boyd snatched onto a lax ball in the UCD defence and seem to be super relaxed as Boyd took his time, and tried a slide rule pass to Moylan who wasn’t expecting the ball.
UCD managed to regroup and clear the ball but it was to point at how easy Shels would find to pull the student’s defence open.
The Red’s dominated the early proceedings forcing a number of errors in the UCD defence from some very early attacks. Despite the dominance of possession and territory they struggled to worry the UCD keeper Kian Moore unduly.
Midfielder Mark Coyle had an early long range effort go skyward which would foreshadow a lot of the visitors attacks in the first half.
After ten minutes a deep JJ Lunney set piece finds Gavin Molloy at the back post but his stretched effort is well off target settling into the side netting.
The students with recent re-signings Sean Brennan and Adam Verdon back in the starting lineup really struggled to live with the intensity of the visitors who prodded and pressurised at every opportunity without really threatening to score.
With time running out in the first half Jad Hakiki had a blistering effort kept out of the bottom corner by a fully outstretched Moore. Moylan wasn’t able to turn home the rebound.
He would make no such mistake moments later when Shelbourne finally did make the breakthrough. Boyd’s effort was well saved down to Moore’s right but Moylan simply flicked it over Moore who couldn’t keep out the second attempt.
Shels continued their policy of shooting from distance without looking like they would convert but JJ Luney finally found his range and his strike from a half cleared ball from the students left Moore with no chance and the midfielder doubled his side’s advantage with 66 minutes on the clock.
UCD almost pulled one back within a minute when subs Gallagher and Clarke combined nicely to create an opportunity but Clarke just couldn’t escape the lunge of JR Wilson who ensure the shot was deflected wide for the corner.
Shelbourne never looked like they would lose the encounter from here and when Moylan was fouled by Moore he dusted himself off to slot the ball inside the right hand post sending Moore the wrong way.
Shels controlled the closing stages and when JR Wilson applied the finish to their fourth in injury time it completed a very happy evening for Duff’s side as their European place rivals Dundalk and Derry dropped points this evening.

Shelbourne are cruising to victory in Belfield as UCD are in damage limitation mode now.
Shelbourne win a penalty after Moylan is pulled down by the UCD keeper. Boyd makes no mistake from the spot for his second.
Almost an instant response from UCD as Brennan and Gallagher combined to give Sami Clark a great opportunity in the box but JR Wilson clears the danger for a corner and UCD can't take advantage.
It was bound to happen if Shelbourne kept striking from distance and JJ Lunney has found the top corner from range as Shelbourne take complete control of this fixture now.
Lunney almost doubled the lead with a great effort from 30 yards which has Moore in all sorts of difficulty but the ball goes just over the top corner of the goal.
Hakiki is the latest Red\'s midfielder to try his luck from distance.
Sean Boyd has another effort from distance but it goes just over the bar.
Sean Boyd just can't get on the end of a Jack Moylan centre as the opportunity to double their lead goes a begging on this occasion.
We're back up and running in Belfield. Can the students pull themselves back into this game?
HALF TIME: UCD 0-1 SHELBOURNE
Shels finally have the breakthrough. Another decent Shels attack produces a full length save from Moore but Moylan this time applies the finish to give them the lead into the half time break.
Shelbourne almost find the opener. Hakiki hits the front and forces a good save from Moore. Moylan gets on the rebound but can't keep his effort on the target.
JJ Lunney leaves two UCD players in his wake as he ghosts through the home defence. Can't get the accuracy or power required to bother Moore who makes an easy save.
Jack Keaney receives the game's first card for a clever foul on half way.
Jack Moylan has just taken a lovely run through the UCD defence and from a narrow angle his effort takes a deflection for a corner. A training ground move sees Mark Coyle with an effort from the set piece but can't get his effort on target.
Sean Boyd gets his head on a lovely Shane Farrell cross but can't get enough power in the effort.
UCD are struggling to live with the pace and tempo of this Shel's performance. Shelbourne have forced a number of turnovers in the UCD half but just haven't bothered Kian Moore in the home goal this evening.
Jack Moylan pounces on a loose ball in the UCD defence but after a lovely move to create the shooting opportunity his effort from 25 yards trails wide on the far side of the field.
Sean Brennan gets his first proper welcome back to the students with a crunching tackle from Mark Coyle who upends the returning UCD player.
JJ Lunney sends in a deep free kick which Gavin Molloy gets on the end of but can only find the side netting.
Mark Coyle has the first real shot of the game with a long range effort always going wide of the left hand post.
Shelbourne almost hand a gift to UCD after Sean Boyd stole the ball and seemed to dally on it. His pass to Jack Moylan wasn't good enough with a clear striking opportunity.
We are underway and Shelbourne immediately go on the attack. They are smelling blood already after UCD's heavy defeat to St. Patrick's Athletic last week.
