Sligo Strengthen Survival Hopes With Win Over Students
Sligo Rovers recorded their first league win since the 15th of July when they defeated bottom side UCD at the Showgrounds.
UCD defender Evan Osam scored an own goal in the 17th minute to give Sligo the lead. It was the first Sligo goal scored in the league since their 2-2 draw with Drogheda Utd on the 28th of July.
Substitute Kailan Barlow grabbed a second goal for John Russell’s side in the 63rd minute. UCD finished the game with 10 men after Adam Wells was harshly sent-off for a foul on Pedro Martelo; it appeared he didn’t touch him and the Portuguese man had dived.
The home side started brightly and forced the Students into the concession of a number of corners in the opening 10 minutes. Although they had possession they didn’t create too much. David Cawley headed wide from a Fabrice Hartmann corner in the sixth minute was the best of the half chances.
UCD were awarded a free in the 11th minute which Sligo keeper Richard Brush tipped over for a corner. From the corner taken by Adam Verdon Harvey O’Brien’s header came off the crossbar.
The home side took the lead in the 17th minute through the unfortunate Osam. In the 23rd minute UCD keeper Lorcan Healy pushed away Hartmann’s effort while down the other end Hartmann cleared the danger after Brush flapped at Sean Brennan’s free.
Pedro Martelo had a chance to open his account for Sligo in the 34th minute. He went racing through on goal but under the pressure of O’Brien he took an extra touch. Just before the break Jack Keaney’s low drive was blocked down.
Inside the first minute of the second half Robbie Burton’s effort was blocked down. John Mahon’s effort came off the header as the home side pressed for a second goal.
Substitute Barlow was only on the pitch a few minutes when he doubled his side’s advantage. Hartmann with the pass and Barlow with an excellent finish. UCD were reduced to 10 men in the 80th minute. Barlow took the resulting free and hit the post with his effort.
