Derry City got back to winning ways as they comfortably dispatched a poor Cork City 3-1 in a fiery encounter at Turners Cross.
Cork started the better of the two teams and enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening ten minutes. They could have had a penalty when Ronan Boyce appeared to have handled the ball but replays showed it appeared to hit his back.
Boyce had Derry’s first chance of the game in the 24th minute when he fizzed a shot just left and wide of Jimmy Corcoran’s goal as the visitors began to exert their influence on the game.
Indeed it was the right back who got the breakthrough for the Candystripes on 39 minutes when he flicked home a header at the near post from a corner to put the visitors 1-0 ahead at the break.
Despite the deficit, Cork came out swinging early in the second half and nearly scored through Ethan Varian who forced an excellent from Brian Maher.
It was a case of one step forward, two steps back however as Michael Duffy doubled Derry’s lead on the hour mark when his long ranged effort went through Corcoran’s arms to make it 2-0.
Cork’s bad luck continued firstly when Cork born Adam O’Reilly was lucky to only receive a yellow card for swinging out at Aaron Bolger. Moments later Brian Maher denied Ruairí Keating’s header with a terrific save.
Moments later, the game was marred with an off-field incident when Maher was pelted with bottles from the Shed end much to the annoyance of the Cork players pleaded with the supporters to stop while the game was also threatened to be abandoned.
Things got even worse for the hosts in the 78th minute when substitute Colm Whelan tucked home to end the game as a contest at 3-0.
Substitute Tundi Owulabi grabbed a consolation goal in injury time with the fact that six minutes were added on summed up Cork City’s night in a dismal performance against a Derry side who were simply a class above.
