Match Report
Derry aid Euro hopes
Derry City added to their hopes of European football next season with a 1-0 win over St Patrick’s Athletic at The Ryan McBride Brandywell tonight.
Junior Uzokwe’s header in the 63rd minute secured the three points for the Candystripes.
There was also late drama as Ronan Coughlan and Danny Lafferty were sent off.
The game started off at a really high tempo with both sides looking to get on the ball and create opportunities.
Pat’s looked to have the better start hitting the post and forcing Nathan Gartside into a save in the first fifteen minutes.
Derry also went close with Jamie McGonigle’s overhead kick but Viteslav Jaros was equal to it and pushed it behind for a corner.
There were a number of other attempts from both teams in the first half with Gartside being the busier of the two ‘keepers.
The visitors looked to be in control going into half-time.
The Saints went close at the beginning of the second period when a Darragh Burns shot stung the palms of Gartside but despite their chances it was the hosts who took the lead.
Jamie McGonigle put in a wonderful cross finding Junior Uzokwe who headed past a helpless Jaros in the net.
Gartside was called into action on a number of occasions towards the end of the match and preserved his team’s lead.
A scuffle in the 85th minute overshadowed the three points for Derry with Ronan Coughlan and Danny Lafferty both being sent off.
It seemed as if Coughlan threw an elbow at Ciaran Coll and Lafferty was involved in the melee afterwards which saw him receive a second yellow.
Despite the red cards, Ruadhri Higgins will be a happy man now that his men have Europen qualification in their own hands.
Stephen O’Donnell will be disappointed that Pat’s could not capitalise on all of their chances considering they were on top for most of the first half.
