Match Report
Derry City strike late to snatch a draw at home to Sligo
Ciaran Coll helped Derry City maintain their unbeaten start to the season with an equalising goal at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.
Coll’s powerful header in the 81st minute drew the home side level after Sligo Rovers had opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Max Mata, against the run of play.
Sligo had been under the cosh before the goal but the goal gave them some impetus. Derry were flat for large periods but piled on the pressure before Coll got them back on level terms.
Derry took a hold of the game early on but for all their possession they failed to really trouble Sligo keeper Luke McNicholas.
The home side thought they had scored in the 10th minute when Jamie McGonigle found the back of the net but referee Adriano Reale had blown for a foul on a Derry player when he should’ve played advantage.
Despite winning a number of corners Derry failed to have an effort on target. Against the run of play the visitors broke the deadlock. Fabrice Hartmann started the move, it ended with Reece Hutchison finding Max Mata at the far post and he headed home from close range.
The goal spurred on Sligo and they started to play some good football. Derry were stunned and their play became a little flat. Patrick McEleney was off target from a Will Patching corner in the 45th minute while down the other end in stoppage time Will Fitzgerald’s shot was just over.
At the start of the second half McGonigle had a chance but he hit his effort straight at McNicholas. Both teams had opportunities but neither keeper was forced into making a save of note.
Substitute Brandon Kavanagh played a good ball to McGonigle he snatched at the ball and it went well wide in the 73rd minute. Derry were back on level terms in the 81st minute when Ben Doherty’s corner was powerfully headed past McNicholas by Ciaran Coll.
Minutes later Bogdan Vastsuk squandered a glorious chance to restore his side’s lead when he was through on goal.
