Dominant Derry Secure Opening Win Of Season Against Rebel Army
Derry City earned their first three points of the new season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Cork City.
With Cork travelling their longest trek of the season, Derry were hoping to take advantage of any visiting jetlag.
Cian Coleman had an early Cork shot go wide before the hosts began monopolising possession.
Jordan McEneff and youngster Ollie O'Neill were central to their best moves.
McEneff twice went close, once with a deflection, and Jamie McGonigle flashed a header past the post.
The pressure finally told on the half hour though, captain Patrick McEleney spying a gap through the Cork defenders and rifling the ball into the bottom corner.
Barry Coffey had a chance to level on half time but Brian Maher stopped his shot well.
Amidst a flurry of bookings, Coffey went closer next. This time he was left rueing Ben Doherty's defensive intervention which flicked his header off target.
McEneff then gave the Candystripes breathing space, clinically dispatching a gorgeous cross from Ryan Graydon for his second goal in as many games.
Maher stayed razor-sharp to deny Cork any sniff, Ruari Keating fluffing from close range and Doherty's unguided header threatening to creep in until a scrambling Maher intervened!
An imperfect Derry performance but three points ahead of the crunch Tallaght assignment next week.
Cork may have zero points so far but they do have plenty to build on.
