LOI PD Report: Dundalk FC v Derry City
Dundalk left it to the late late show but Patrick Hoban was the hero to level in the 90th minute as his towering header broke the stubborn Derry defence to claim a vital point at Oriel Park.
Derry City had taken the leads thanks to a well-placed strike from James Akintunde in the first half but the second half belonged to the Lilywhites. Dundalk piled continuous pressure on the visitors and got their just reward with a last-minute goal from Dundalk’s trusted number 9.
The opening chance of the game was generated by Dundalk following a deft pass from Sloggett to Bradley. Although it appeared as though the winger would shoot after switching to his left foot, he elected to chip the ball to the back post, where Hoban was outstretched and narrowly missed the cross.
Derry would score the opening goal, which was superbly delivered. After Sloggett was dispossessed, James Akindtunde took possession of the ball on the left side and bore into the area. He then bobbed and weaved to open up space before slipping the ball past Sheppard on the six-yard line.
When Joe Thompson avoided the offside trap and got past the Dundalk defence with only the goalkeeper to beat, it appeared as though he would add a second. To smother the ball at the Derry players' feet required bravery from Nathan Sheppard and the Welsh Under 21 keeper did just that. As Dundalk broke free, Patrick Hoban set up Ryan O'Kane, who sent a beautiful low curling shot that Maher deflected away.
The second half belonged to Dundalk as Sam Bone, who weaved his way into the area and fired a well-placed shot that narrowly missed the post as he nearly levelled for Dundalk as they controlled the second half. The Lilywhites persisted in pressing, and a superb pass from Hoban found Stephen Bradley cutting inside before he fired a shot that narrowly missed the target. Ryan O'Kane's low effort had to be finger-tipped and saved by Maher after a superb ball was delivered in by both Ward and Bradley. It appeared as though they were about to draw level.
The man who is always in the right position at the right time finally came up trumps, ensuring that the home side got their full rewards for their persistence. Hoban received a cross from Bradley, and he leapt highest to drive the ball home. That goal can be more valuable than anyone is aware of.
