Match Report
Gaffney goal gets Rovers win
Rory Gaffney rattled the net 24 minutes into the Dublin derby to scrape Shamrock Rovers the bragging rights against Bohemians in a packed Tallaght Stadium tonight.
Cross field passes peppered with forward attacking threats from Stephen Mallon, Kris Twardek and Ryan Cassidy characterized the visitor’s opening half, while The Hoops praised possession amongst themselves with Jack Byrne, Graham Burke and Dylan Watts particularly dangerous.
The goal surfaced when that very trio helped by Ronan Finn
were causing havoc on the right wing, a hazardous ball dropping to the captain who converted from the six yard box after a Ciaran Kelly mishap.
Ten minutes later a blocked Gaffney shot led to an opportunity for Watts but having had his original header collected well by James Talbot he was then called back for a handball.
Jordan Flores picked up a yellow card to take one for the team and stop a Byrne counter attack before the one minute of added time was elapsed and the sides went into the tunnel with 1-0 to the hosts on the scoreboard.
Bohs came out after the break all guns blazing and while Ryan Cassidy, Dawson Devoy and Flores’s best efforts early on Rovers began to control the game as the substitutions and yellow cards began to flow.
In that regard Sean Hoare, Lopes and Tyreke Wilson were all issued warnings, while Liam Burt, Aaron Greene, Barry Cotter, Danny Mandriou, Richie Towell, Jordan Doherty and Jamie Mullins all made appearances in the second half.
Mandriou in particular looked lively when he came on, forcing Talbot into a few saves as he ran ragged at Bohs’ defensive line.
Man of the match was awarded to Lee Grace as a stakeholder and solid option for the men in green and white throughout the game.
Next up Shamrock Rovers head to Oriel Park to battle it out with Dundalk FC, while The Gypsies have to rise to expectations of yet another capital city clash when they play out Damien Duff’s Shelbourne in Dalymount Park.

Kicking off in an hour it’s live on LOITV with live updates available here on FinalWhistle.ie.
Their recent run of form left wanting since the restart, manager Stephen Bradley is confident points will come ahead of tonight’s face off. “Sometimes it just happens that you don’t get the result, but really happy with the performance” he says. “Another derby to look forward to, and another massive crowd in Tallaght which is brilliant to see. And like I said, we’ll just focus on what we do, bring that level again, go a little bit more and the result will look after itself.”
Jordan Flores and Stephen Mallon have also been on target for Bohs so far in the 2022 season, while Graham Burke, Sean Hoare, Jack Byrne and co have been impressive for The Rovers.
They reigning champions are coming off the back of a sore 1-0 defeat to rivals St Patrick’s Athletic where Chris Forrester’s goal proved the difference, while Keith Long’s men made it out of Finn Park with a share of the spoils when Omochere’s 52nd minute net was made void by Ryan Connolly in the 66th.
Their most recent clash back in November saw a 3-1 victory for The Gypsies in Dalymount with an OG and strikes from Promise Omochere and Rob Cornwall standing them in good stead. This evening though they will have to cross the Liffey in hopes of an away triumph amid a sold out attendance.
On the four occasions they met in the league last year the pair the results were split to one win in the Hoops favour to a draw and two wins for Bohemians.
Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians encounter in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division tonight at 8pm in Tallaght Stadium with a bumper crowd expected to turnout for the Dublin derby. My name is Alanna Cunnane and I'll be bringing you tonight's match commentary.
