Shels stay unbeaten with win in Wexford
Shelbourne’s unbeaten run in the First Division remains in tact with a 1-0 win away at Wexford FC.
A George Poynton penalty was the difference between the two sides, as Wexford put up a valiant second half performance at Ferrycarrig Park.
The league leaders did not come out firing on all cylinders as they had done against Bray, but they still managed to come away with the three points, remaining unbeaten in the division. Wexford can take some positives from their performance, particularly in the second half when they began to carve out more chances.
Chances were scarce for Wexford in the opening 45 minutes as Kyle Robinson missed their only attempt on goal after 36 minutes. It was Shelbourne that dominated the first half. George Poynton pulled the strings in midfield, dictating the tempo. Their first attempt coming just before 20 minutes, when Shane Farrell’s close-range strike failed to meet the target.
Wexford keeper Jimmy Corcoran had a busy first half and he was forced into making a good reaction save from a glancing header on the half hour mark. Shelbourne were finally breaking down a stubborn Wexford defence and a scrappy passage of play inside the Wexford box resulted in a penalty to the visitors.
It was Poynton that stepped up to roll the ball down the middle of the goal to give Shelbourne the lead and get his third goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 at half-time and Shelbourne seemed comfortable enough to ease off the home side, never really threatening for the remainder of the game. Their laid back approach allowed the home side to gain some momentum and after the hour mark Wexford began to push on in search of an equaliser.
Karl Fitzsimons sent a header wide from one of several corners won by Wexford within the space of five minutes. Conor Crowley also saw his long range attempt drag wide of the post.
Crowley was one of the standout players for Wexford, covering the majority of the pitch and winning the ball back multiple times. However, it was the class of Poynton and left-back Kevin O’Connor that saw Shelbourne through to the end.
The win tonight sees Shelbourne go 11 points clear of UCD at the top of the First Division, while Wexford remain at the bottom of the table.
