Win 17 in the bag for Tribesmen who keep gap

A goal in either half for Galway United secured a comfortable 2-0 victory in Ferrycarrig Park this evening.

McCormack in the first half from a direct corner and McCarthy in the second from a quickly taken free kick were the difference on the day.

Despite a strong start on the ball from Wexford, it lead to no major chances and Galway struck with their first to take an early lead.

A direct Corner from Conor McCormack from the left hand side was lofted towards the front post where it seemed to hit Wexford leading scorer Aaron Dobbs who claimed he was pushed but to no avail and the unfortunate ricochet went past Heffernan for the opening goal.

Dobbs did have a chance to level shortly afterwards but could not direct his header goalwards just before the half hour mark.

Galway started to turn the screw before the break with Heffernan forced into a couple of excellent saves keeping his side just one behind at the break.

United doubled their lead just before the hour mark in the game with a clever set piece move. As the Youths were busy setting up their wall, Galway United caught them napping with a quickly taken free kick setting in Ed McCarthy who slotted past Heffernan in the left corner to the bemusement of the Wexford players.

Dobbs came close with another header and Fitzpatrick did have an effort come back off the bar but Clarke kept his clean sheet, now up to 11 on the season in just 19 games.

Galway go into the break absolutely thrilled with an incredible first half to the season that not even they could have predicted whilst Wexfords playoff hopes march on, only three points back but with better nights to come.
