Ludden Converts Late Penalty For Crucial Point
Marc Ludden's second half penalty prevented Treaty United falling to four consecutive defeats. His 77th minute effort cancelled out a Darragh Levingston opener, which looked for so long like giving Wexford all three points.
Indeed, Levingston’s stunning 15th minute volley looked like the game deciding goal against a youthful Treaty United XI. The visitors were chasing a third win on the bounce against a side who were looking to avoid a fourth win on the spin.
A demoralising 7-0 loss to Waterford wouldn’t have helped the mood for Treaty, who hadn’t scored since they defeated Longford Town in mid-May.
After Levingston’s opener, Wexford appeared to drop deeper and deeper, with Treaty playing some nice football, albeit without any real cutting edge. Colin Conroy went closest with a bobbling shot late in the first half.
There was efforts from Conor Barry in the third quarter, but Wexford continued to look comfortable. There was one moment of real panic, when Corban Piper almost turned a corner into his own net. The New Zealander looked assured for most of the night alongside League of Ireland veteran, Hugh Douglas.
The equaliser came after sustained Treaty probing, with Lee Devitt, Colin Kelly and Dean George all linking well at times. Marc Ludden, who vacated his left-back berth, was tripped by Reece Webb.
The Galwegian stepped up and powered beyond Charlie Heffernan, who guessed correctly.
There was to be no winner despite an end-to-end final 10 minutes, Treaty relived to get back on the points collecting trail, Wexford frustrated that they’d not managed to win three on the bounce for the first time this season.
Both sides remain outside the top five, where they will realistically need to keep in close order in the coming weeks.
