Stalemate Enough For Athlone To Reach Play-Offs
The final El Clasico of the season ended in stalemate as Athlone Town got the result they needed to claim 5th place and the final play-off spot.
Both sides had scoring opportunities but couldn’t convert them. Keepers made saves when they were called into action while there was good defending.
The result ended a run of four defeats in a row for Athlone Town. Their form left them on the verge of finishing outside the Top 5 for the first time this season but they were able to rally in this final game against Longford to earn a point.
n an entertaining first half, both sides had chances to break the deadlock. Longford forced a corner in the first minute of the game but Bastien Hery blasted his effort over the bar.
Valerii Dolia had an effort in the 11th minute but it just went over. In the 20th minute Daniel McKenna’s free had to be headed away for a corner ahead of Patrick Hickey. Minutes later McKenna played a terrific ball across to Jamar Campion Hinds, his powerful shot appeared to take a nick off the crossbar and went wide.
Athlone cleared Viktor Serdeniuk’s ball off the line in the 33rd minute as Longford started to put pressure on. Down the other end Dylan Gavin’s header just went wide. In first half stoppage time Ola Adeyemo brought a great save out of Enda Minogue and the ball was cleared off the line by Noah van Geenan.
The second half wasn’t as entertaining as the first. Longford keeper Jack Brady pulled off a terrific save in the 49th minute to deny Campion Hinds. Ross Fay was unlucky in the 54th minute as Adeyemo played a fine ball across the face of the goal.
In the 69th minute Gavin had a great chance to open the scoring; Oisin Duffy played the ball to him, he took a shot but it just went wide.
Athlone were pacing when on the counter and in the 74th minute they created another opportunity but Hickey’s header was just inches wide.
Right at the end Longford substitute Cristian Magerusan had a chance to grab a late winner but he directed his shot wide.
