Match Report
Students Stroll Past Ramblers
On what was a perfect day in coastal Cobh, this was a game that took time to get going. It was a very scrappy opening to the first half with neither side really dominating. UCD arguably were playing slightly slicker football and it was determined play from Colm Whelan in the 27th minute through the middle of the pitch which cut open the Cobh defence.
It was the first time he found a pocket of space and his intelligent pass slipped in Liam Kerrigan behind the Cobh defence and he drove the ball low and hard into the far corner of the net. The UCD defence was absolutely dominant in dealing with any Cobh attacks.
Eoin Farrell was playing well on the right wing, and it was his good work and cross from the right wing which was perfectly placed for Liam Kerrigan, who just glanced a deft header beyond the goalkeeper into the net.
A few minutes later, in the final attack of the first half, Colm Whelan carved out a chance out of nothing. He controlled the ball on his chest, taking it down and striking the ball cleanly through the laces, and he was unlucky to see his effort rebound off the crossbar. UCD held the half-time lead at 2-0.
The second half opened with another promising run from Eoin Farrell rampaging down the right but there was no UCD attacker to capitalize in the penalty area. Pierce Phillips then began an enterprising run down the wing but unfortunately for Cobh, the pull back was behind the in rushing Cobh attack.
Sean Brennan was starting to impose himself in the middle of the pitch and after a tough tackle on him, UCD won a free-kick in a central area. Jack Keaney stepped up and curled it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. In general play, UCD appeared comfortable in possession.
With twenty minutes remaining, Cobh were yet to really threaten the UCD goal. Cobh's balls into attacking positions haven't been good enough tonight. In goals, Lorcan Healy was pulling balls out of the sky. He looked more than capable for anything thrown at him.
Up front, Whelan was a constant menace, and a lovely jinxing run where he faked a shot twice to create space allowed him space but his curling shot just went over the bar. He cam close two minutes later again, as a long ball put him clear through one-on-one with the keeper, but he was slightly off balance as he shot and the keeper saved it comfortably.
However, he would have the last laugh in the 90th minute when after a run, he was taken down and as everybody seemed to wait for a referee's whistle, Whelan got up and finished to the back of the net. His resilience was rewarded with a goal for the night.
